And thank you very much for the guidance and advice in that next step.

I spoke with my cousin (also a civil engineer) at a funeral about a month ago. He told me he thought there was a good chance every civil in America might be out of work before this recession is over - many of them for good. I reluctantly agreed with him.

8 out of 10 civil engineers that I know are out of work in SoCal due to the RE related industry. Land development and housing are dead. Those who were lucky enough ventured into the governmental and civic work. This is a really tough time for engineers and architects. I hope Mrs would find other opportunities soon.
 
My sympathies to the Mrs.

In my ghettofabulous hood, we had 3 water main breaks on the same street happen within about 2 month's time span. With infrastructure as bad as it is, we should have every single willful CE employed. But, like social security, we just kick the can down the road. One day the median worker age will be 60, bridges will be collapsing daily, and we'll all be showering once a week. Maybe then will be the right time to deal with these problems.

No. I'm going to have to find something else other than leech off of the weakness of others. I think I've played four times total since Feburary, and only because it was a requirement to drink beers at a certain IHB'ers house.

Sorry to hear that.

Depending on the age, directional changes should be seriously considered. The major civil engineering firms all had major layoffs. AE firms actually have been very slow outsourcing work overseas in the past many years, and many are seriously starting now. With work slowing down in US, picking up at other parts of the world, having more resource located in the business "center of gravity" also starting to make sense for many firms. I know of several civil engineers who have been out of work for nearly a year.

Seems like that time again as a friend of mines sister was notified of her lay off last Friday and she was the HR type with 10 years with her company. Didn't have a clue.

Sorry to hear that No Vas. I was working for a Civil Engineering firm in a purchasing capacity before I got laid off in July. Hope she finds something soon.
 
Seriously... again... I'm sorry no_vas. This economy blows. Too many good people losing their jobs. I really... really f*&king hate being right about jobs right now. If the one thing I could have been wrong about, this is the one thing that I truly wish that I was wrong about.
 
Sorry to hear about Mrs. No_Vas getting laidoff again. But as she did before, I'm sure she'll land on her feet again. So civil engineers are getting laidoff left and right....which type of engineers are actually in demand in today's economy? MEs? EEs?
