Economy and Climate Change

Starting 2025, Bank Australia will no longer offer new loans for diesel, gasoline and hybrid cars to encourage increase in EV car purchases. Note that they plan to still provide loans for used non-EV cars. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/22/aus...-loans-for-new-diesel-and-gasoline-cars-.html

"Goal: End of gas engins by 2030 (All new cars are electric by 2030 - 2049 and road use at 60% of 2020 level by 2050)" (From first posting in this thread.)
Yawn. Australia Bank is a small customer owned 'bank' 1/5th the size of Teachers First credit union that has a registered as a B-Corp in Australia. For lack of a more nuanced explanation, a B-corp is essentially meant to be transparent as a SJW proponent.

IF the Sierria Club had a credit union would anybody be up in arms if it didn't create new loans for fossil fuel cars? LOL.

The UK recently expanded their vehicle climate initiative targeting gas and diesel cars. ULEZ (ultra low emission zone) cameras which read the license plates of offending vehicles have been installed throughout greater London. Individuals caught on camera driving gas cars that were registered prior to 2006 and diesel cars registered prior to 2015 are fined $16 per day. Failure to comply may incur a fine of over $200 a day. Currently, there are approximately 800,000 gas/diesel cars that come under this scheme. Local activists who are being called "blade runners" have been taking down the ULEZ cameras in defiance of the government scheme to fine local citizens. https://en.mercopress.com/2023/09/0...de-runners-attack-and-disable-control-cameras

Although inflation has come down from 11% back in October 2022 to around 6.8% as of July 2023 in the UK, food and gas prices are still high and many in London are struggling financially. If they can not drive their older vehicle without being fined, those financially unable to purchase a newer car to come into compliance with the new rules will have no choice but to abandon their gas cars and switch to bicycles and public transportation. This may be the end goal for these ULEZ cameras and fines.

This scheme is in addition to the 15 minute city program in effect in several neighborhoods in London with similar goals for controlling emissions using fines. This program also makes it inconvenient to drive your own car and encourages people to use bicycles and public transportation. (See the post on 15 minute city here: https://www.talkirvine.com/threads/economy-and-climate-change.18564/page-2)

So glad not to live in Texas. Still triple digits over there... in September.

I get irritable when it hits high 80s in SoCal. :)

We had a summer like they’re having, three summer ago? Remember the summer of the stalled high pressure were it was just way above average weeks on end.

…or it’s just hot during the summer in Texas…😂😂😂

Hottest Summer Smackdown: 2011 vs. 1980

You hear it almost anytime anyone mentions the heat: "Remember the Summer of 1980?"

It seems nearly everyone who was alive at the time has a story about how they endured the granddaddy of Texas heat waves -- and many of those stories include tall tales of cooking the morning's breakfast on the front walk.

That didn't happen, but it was plenty hot. But just how bad was it really and how close are we to finally eclipsing that legendary summer?

The summer of 1980 broke or tied 29 daily records, many of which still stand to this day.

That was in 2018. I was still living in Eastvale, and we had triple digits for more than 80 days that summer. My avocado tree finally gave me a couple of fruits and they burned to crisp.

I don't remember multiple days of triple digit heat in Orange County 3 years or in 2018.

And definitely not 80 days worth.

I would have moved to solar had that happened... but after this year's bills... definitely need to make the move.

You don’t remember last year? or 2020? Or 2017 Or tons of other times in the OC when we had similar summer heat wave weather?🤷🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️😂😂😂

Temperature records set in Orange County over Labor Day weekend, heat wave continuing through Friday

SEPT. 6, 2022 5:09 PM PT

Meanwhile in coastal Orange County, Newport Beach recorded a high of 97 on Sunday — close, but not quite high enough to upend its previous record of 102 degrees set in 2017.

She noted a similar heat wave took place over Labor Day weekend in 2020.

Orange County did have multiple days of triple digits back in 2018, just not 80 days straight.

have not turned on the AC once this summer..I am begging my wife to turn it on at least once per year but she has too many potted plants around the AC unit and want me to move all of them..

What about some people saying they can now "create" weathers? I guess it is technically possible. Not sure how much they can alter the original weather though.

Were any of those multiple consecutive days of triple digit heat?

Although... before 2020, I was in-office... so maybe I didn't feel it.

They only say that to pay lip service, they really don’t care. And neither do I. Drill, baby drill! 🤷🏽‍♂️🦄🌈
