Congress Elections

The plot thickens. There were videos/pictures of police (not sure which agency) opening the door to the capital, lifting the barriers, taking selfie?s with the insurgents.

A big time investigation should take place.

NYPost: Capitol police hold door for pro-Trump protesters, video shows

A Capitol Police officer was seen politely holding the door for the pro-President Trump protesters to walk out of the building after they caused mayhem that forced lawmakers to barricade themselves inside.

Footage posted to Twitter showed an officer standing by as a stream of cheering protesters filed out of the historic building Wednesday after disrupting a joint session of Congress to certify the November presidential election.

The security or police opened the door for them to leave. A little too nice?

What is sad is the US capital was under siege! The last time this happened was in 1814 by the British.

Multiple angles of the shooting. Trigger warning for professor chaos and others, violence and kashooting.

Some info about the rioter who died. Sad.

Police Identify Woman Shot by Capitol Police as Ashli Babbitt; Officer who shot at Air Force veteran and Trump backer placed on leave amid investigation of her death during Wednesday riot

Ashli Babbitt served for more than a dozen years in the Air Force and Air National Guard, including several deployments to Iraq during the war.

More recently, in a Twitter account under her name, she retweeted thousands of tweets supporting President Trump. On Tuesday, she tweeted herself: "Nothing will stop us....they can try and try and try but the storm is here and it is descending upon DC in less than 24 hours....dark to light!"

Her postings on social media leave clues as to how a 35-year-old military veteran turned into an angry supporter of the president.

In a recent posting, she included the hashtag #WWG1WGA, or Where We Go 1 We Go All, a slogan associated with QAnon , a far right-wing, loosely organized network and community of believers who embrace a range of unsubstantiated beliefs.

Ms. Babbitt died Wednesday after being shot by the Capitol Police , the police said, as she was part of the crowd aiming to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election. Capitol Police identified Ms. Babbitt Thursday and said the officer who shot her had been placed on leave while her death is investigated.

Ms. Babbitt lived in San Diego. She and her husband owned a pool services and supply company in suburban San Diego, according to California state business records. Her husband didn't respond to phone and email messages.

Robert J. Contee III, DC Metropolitan Police chief, described the incident Wednesday. "One Capitol Police officer discharged a service weapon striking an adult female," he said. "She was transported to a local hospital where all lifesaving efforts failed. She was pronounced deceased."

Multiple videos of the shooting posted on social media show Ms. Babbitt, who appears to be wearing a Trump flag as a cape, falling from a smashed-out window after being shot by an officer on the other side of a set of double doors. The doors appear to have been barricaded to block rioters from making their way into a Congressional hallway.

In the videos, multiple police officers appear to provide first aid to Ms. Babbitt, who was taken to a hospital and later died of her injuries.

On Wednesday, Ms. Babbitt's husband told San Diego television station KUSI that she was a passionate Trump supporter. A Facebook page attributed to Ms. Babbitt says the two married in 2019.

The Storming of the U.S. Capitol

In social-media profiles in her name, Ms. Babbitt is described as a veteran and libertarian who loved her husband, her large black-and-white dog "and above all, my country."

Ms. Babbitt served in the U.S. Air Force under the name of Ashli Elizabeth McEntee, in the branch's security forces, between 2004 and 2008, according to military records. She was a senior airman, a rank of E-4, and last served at Dyess Air Force Base, near Abilene, Texas. She didn't rise to become a noncommissioned officer after years in the reserves and National Guard, according to official records.

She left active duty in April 2008 and served in the Air Force Reserve from 2008 to 2010 and then served in the Air National Guard until 2016, according to records.

During her career, she deployed overseas, including in Iraq.

It was in 2016 that Ms. Babbitt was issued the first of two peace orders, Maryland's version of a restraining order, according to court records, although they don't provide details on who requested the order. She had another restraining order filed against her in 2017, according to Maryland court records. She also was charged in Maryland that year for "willful motor vehicle damage without the owner's consent" but was found not guilty. She was charged again in 2016 with reckless endangerment, for which she was found not guilty, and malicious destruction of property, for which she was acquitted, that same year, court records show. In 2019, she had a complaint filed against her for aggressive driving that was thrown out based on a lack of jurisdiction, the court records show.

Since her death, Ms. Babbitt has been held up by many pro-Trump social-media accounts as something of a martyr. Virginia State Sen. Amanda Chase, who was at the Capitol on Wednesday, wrote in a Facebook post late Wednesday : "ASHLI BABBITT; say HER name. A veteran who was brutally murdered by Capitol Police today."

Right-wing social media influencer Rogan O'Handley, who has 1.8 million followers on Instagram, praised Ms. Babbitt. "She did not deserve to be shot and killed by Capitol police while unarmed." The post was liked more than 186,000 times.

On Twitter, an account in her name that uses the nickname "CommonAshSense," routinely retweeted supporters of Mr. Trump, including attorney L. Lin Wood. She repeatedly retweeted posts about Wednesday's rally. On Wednesday she retweeted a comment from Mr. Wood calling for Vice President Mike Pence to resign and be charged with treason. That tweet was removed by Twitter.

The account, opened in October 2016, includes retweets and comments supportive of conspiracy theories. In November 2018 she posted a pair of videos, recorded while she was driving, complaining about California politicians.

"How about we worry about what the hell you are doing. What have you done?" Ms. Babbitt said. "I'm telling you now, I'm putting you all on notice. Every one of you politicians in California."

She named Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Gov. Jerry Brown, Rep. Maxine Waters, all Democrats, and Republican former Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter.

The account also shared posts against wearing face masks to limit the spread of the coronavirus. On Dec. 9, responding to a news report of an underground party being broken up in Los Angeles, she tweeted that Covid-19 was a joke.

"You aren't a threat to anyone by simply breathing. The officers are fine but should be ashamed. COVID IS A F?ING JOKE! They will face no punishment in court... this is America not China. There are rules here about freedoms and things of that nature!" she wrote.

Business Insider Article: Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, called for 'trial by combat' while addressing a mob of pro-Trump supporters, just hours before hundreds of them violently stormed the Capitol on Wednesday.

Giuliani repeated false claims that the election results were "fraudulent" and told the crowd: "If we are wrong we will be made fools of, but if we're right a lot of them will go to jail. So let's have trial by combat."

Trial by combat is a term deriving from ancient Germanic law in which individuals settle disputes through armed combat.

Just looking at the time since the election, let alone the last 4 years, the meaning of rhetoric is plainly obvious.  We have dealt with the ?I didn?t explicitly say that? in Nuremberg.  I only followed orders. Etc.

In the end, after they assaulted the capitol, Trump basically said bravo patriots. Clearly indicating, IMHO, they did exactly what he encouraged them to do and hoped they would do.

What a load of...false equivalence!

How can the traitor trumpists imply that the death of someone storming the US capital is the same as Taylor, shot in her own home in a fusillade of gunfire from home invaders with badges.

SGIP,

I appreciate your response, but what made Trump the most complicit in the insurrection wasn't any particular line of that morning rally. It was his refusal to send any assistance to the Capitol Building where the Vice President, his family and the entire body of Congress was hiding from armed MAGA rioters, some of whom were intent on causing harm to them.

Maryland Governor, a Republican said that congress was begging for the National Guard from Maryland after Trump refused to send the DC National Guard and the Trump administration refused to allow Maryland to send their National guard eitherhttps://www.militarytimes.com/news/...es-delayed-permission-to-send-national-guard/

It wasn't until Pence broke the chain of command and also bypassed the Security of Defense that any help was send to the Capitol Building.

As rioters smashed windows and forced lawmakers into hiding, the head of the Maryland National Guard was told he could not come to the aid of US Capitol police, per Hogan.

Ninety minutes later, according to Hogan, the secretary of the Army, Ryan McCarthy, called him to request the deployment.

Typically such calls come from the US Secretary of Defense. It was not the only apparent breach in the chain of command on Wednesday. The order to deploy the National Guard came not from the commander in chief, President Donald Trump, but rather Vice President Mike Pence, according to The New York Times.

@SGIP:

You didn't mention that Trump also told the "terrorists":

"We Love You, You?re Very Special."

If an idiot is looking for validation for their actions... isn't that it?

Or was he insulting them by calling them "special"? I would say they are special... particulary the ones who posted their pics on social media making it a home run for prosecution.

@PaperboyNC,

The Senators listed in the article are all with a D behind their name. They kept saying "We don't have the authority...." but they knew who did. Was a call placed to POTUS? Not that I can tell from that article or in any other news resource. So what if VP Pence OK'd the National Guard? For all we know he may have been the first person available in the Executive Branch to get that done. So very little facts are on the ground right now and articles filled with speculation aren't all that interesting to me. As for the level of Police and NG in DC at the time, those levels were based on past Trump rally emergency and law enforcement threats. DC Police were clearly understaffed. Intelligence on what could have gone wrong wasn't paid attention to. It's a failure to plan correctly rather than respond swiftly that caused this to become the problem that it has now. It's 2020 hindsight and I wish that Genie could be stuffed back into the bottle.

@IHO -

The clip you're mentioning isn't the focus of the video released by the President. It's easy to parse a small part of a call to disburse out like that, but not as truthful as it could be. I've heard that statement distilled down to claims that POTUS "loves" what happened - one word out of a 2 minute video.  The same  goes for those idiots looking for validation. They don't hear the larger "go home" peaceably message, only what is played over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again ad nauseum by the media. Those kinds of people looking for any scrap of validation cannot be stopped even if they were called "terrorists" or thugs. The President condemmned Nazi's and the KKK for many years, but did either of these groups stop because of what was said?

Swift law enforcement, thorough prosecution of offenders, and irreducible jail sentences may put he respect of law back where it belongs. I just don't see it given our current culture, what with "protestors" being released, bailed out, and criminal charging enhancements being cancelled by DA's (LA County for example) this may never happen.

Also yes, social media could help identify these kooks. I'm all for it. You post it? You live with the repercussions.

IMHO these problems have mushroomed once one side was given the "Get out of jail free" card. Looting without law enforcement sends a terrible message. It's basic undenyable human nature for every other group to believe they will get the same treatment - a free pass to riot without consequence. Had more heads been cracked in Seattle, Portland, Long Beach, and other summer riot filled cities, perhaps DC wouldn't have occurred. As soon as a time machine can be made commercially available we might go back and test this theory for success or failure.

Not a reasonable statement. If you take the statement at the rally at the mall. He and Rudy are encouraging people to take action. I am taking a guess that this thing was well planned.
There was new article of someones social media account taking a private jet from CA to D. Then with a photo by broken glass at the capital.
There are reports police arrested a person with molatav cocktails, there are pictures of people with zip ties, many people have onions for their eyes for tear gas. The fbi is looking for information relating to the pipe bomb. This is not a coincidence.

Federal Police Agencies - Please search the emails, phones, and correspondence. (Maybe no Miranda rights needed due to national security threat and previous actions that happened in the capital.) We need to get to the bottom of this.

TMZ: ALABAMA MAN ARRESTED ...
11 Molotov Cocktails in Truck!!!

According to legal docs -- obtained by TMZ -- Coffman approached cops and told them he was trying to get to his vehicle -- a red pickup -- the same suspicious vehicle they had received calls about.

Cops say he asked them if they found the bombs, and upon searching his truck ... they found 11 mason jars containing an unknown liquid with a golf tee in the top of each jar, cloth rags and lighters. AKA -- Molotov cocktails.

Coffman's been arrested, and cops say -- based on security footage -- he was seen leaving the vehicle parked near the Capitol building on Wednesday morning.

Again. This is a joke to you. That the capital was taken over.
I will say this to you again and again. Country and constitution over party.

Morekas does not believe TMZ. So guys here you go.

NBC article citing the DOJ:
Authorities have made a series of arrests following the riots at the Capitol. The U.S. Department of Justice announced several cases Friday with some deeply disturbing allegations.

Among them is the case announced against Alabama resident Lonnie Coffman. Federal officials say they found 11 Molotov cocktails filled with gasoline and homemade napalm inside Coffman's red pickup truck near the Capitol grounds Wednesday, in addition to a cache of firearms including an automatic weapon.

Come on the guy was not there to serve drinks to the protestors look at the ingredients.

Joking aside, wall of text isn't going to beat images of people in Trump capes attacking the capital in the mindshare game. Trump is doneskies for a while, we'll see what his next move is.

Another important point, BLM or Antifa dont call themselves "the party of law and order" or even "democrats". Their behavior will thus be held to a lower standard, and will not be tied closely to the Biden administration by most folks. Whereas the actions of someone cosplaying as Trump-Man are obviously going to be tied much more firmly to Trump himself.

Not to mention, fighting against systemic oppression is a much more relatable cause than mostly unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. One sounds like people fighting for their lives and livelihood, the other sounds like a bunch of delusional losers. This worry over voter fraud also feels hypocritical considering the criminal, sometimes brutal, methods of black voter suppression and fraud historically in the US which has an enormous body of evidence compared to anything presented by the Trump camp. Like most things in politics, it seems people only worry about these things when it negatively affects them, ignoring all historical context or even their own previous beliefs.

If hand-wringing over voting fraud allegations leads to anything, I hope its an abolishment of our outdated first past the post voting system and implementation of ranked-choice (or instant runoff) voting. This current system inevitably leads to two divided parties and tends towards enabling unpopular extremist policies favored by a party's base, but not serving the majority of Americans. Of course, neither party wants to give up their stranglehold on power so why would they ever implement it? Unless the system completely breaks down....

CGP does a great job of explaining the inherent problems with our current systems in this playlist. If you have the time I highly recommend giving it a peak and interested to know people's thoughts.
