Can Irvine become too Asian?

If you are not an Asian male living in the USA, there is no way you could ever really understand.

I'm an Asian male living in the US.  I think there has been a lot of progress but it's up to you to see (and encourage) the positives or focus only on negatives.

Back in 1997 when they released Robert A. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" they whitewashed Juan "Johnny" Rico's character, who was supposed to be Filipino.  There were few complaints.  If they did that today imagine the outrage.  Netflix just announced last week that they will NOT whitewash Reki Kawahara's "Sword Art Online" and the characters Kirito and Asuna will be protrayed by Asian actors.

Today even right wing authors like James Wesley Rawles insert Asian characters in his novel (Patriots) in a positive role so nobody can accuse him of being a racist.

If you want to look at negatives, how close does our society resemble social Darwinism where the flesh of the weak becomes food for the strong, and the stupid become subservient tools to the clever?  Those who succeed to the top live in decadent consumption & individualism versus those who fall becomes the culls?

If someone makes a stupid racist comment because they feel threatened by you ("too many Asians"), sometimes it's because their life focus is on survival.

Don't they "Asianate" characters in some of today's movies and media?

The funny thing is when movies adapt an Asian story (comic, manga, whatever) wouldn't you expect it to be Americanized? Like do Asian movies cast white actors in their films?

Who would be mad if Asians were cast as some characters in the Black Panther movie? :)

No...I would expect it to be true to the race.  You don't need to cast Tilda Swinton in a role that is supposed to be for an Asian.

Asians in Black Panther would be as ridiculous as casting Scarlett Johannsen in Ghost in the Shell.

Offhand, Wasp from Avengers is now Asian in the comics. Psylocke, originally British, is now Asian (some body swap thing) and was portrayed by Olivia Munn in the latest X-Men movies (Munn is part Asian). Blink in the TV series, The Gifted, is using an Asian actress (forgot her name but her claim to fame was MTV's reality shows... Road Rules(?)).

It depends, sometimes you cast for the actors visibility or ability... or for the story.

Tilda was fine as The Ancient One.

Nick Fury was not African American.

Johnny Depp is not Native American.

The Mandarin of Iron Man was a fake and now is real, but what race?

I guess it doesn't bother me, in the case of Ghost in the Shell, I think they were trying to portray it as a global future, not just a Japanese one (haven't seen the movie yet).

All the futuristic dystopian movies like blade runner or it?s copycat version on Netflix ?altered carbon ? , have Asian cities ? look or vibe ?as their backdrop . Tall buildings with a lot of glitzy neon signs like in Tokyo or Taipei or Beijing . Lots of billboard signs in Asian scripts . Also all the street vendors and street food is Asian .

But the main cast of this ?future ? is mostly white

You're starting to sound like the alt-righters that complained about black actors in Thor.  :D

Because the non-main cast... or the bad guys... are Asian. :)

Saw Blade Runner 2049 a few weeks ago... definitely Asian feel... but definitely non-Asian cast.

At least Altered Carbon's main character was Asian... but most of the time he was in a non-Asian sleeve... hah.

That Takeshi Kovacs is a cool M.. F ..  hope we see more of his sleeve in season 2 .

Altered carbon had great potential to show a fictional future where people are gender and race fluid through sleeves.  But since it's a dystopian/noir sci-fi, they put more effort into the wealth gap/poverty/classed society aspect.  Somewhat like Battle Angel Alita's ground dwellers/scrapyard vs Tiphares that towers above.

Some people criticize the show for its over the top violence.  But I think the point they were trying to make is that when you remove the "balance of death" and give immortality (or lengthy life extension technologies), the long life itself becomes a decadence that lead to extreme indulgence in which others who are less fortunate pay a heavy price for.

Yup...that's the best part of the show.

Yup...that's the best part of the show.

Apparently it is supposed to be the most expensive TV production  after game of thrones and Westworld

And in many ways , it is like Westworld , esp the over indulgence and violent thematic

As with all these shows , women are always at the receiving end of sexual violence which is depicted in almost porn like fashion .. think that?s where the criticism stems from .

I do like the show overall and am looking forward to season 2

Thank you @qwerty for demonstrating my point.

You're a BIGOT.

This type of garbage @#($@#$ that spews from @qwerty's mouth, so casually, so calmly and effortlessly....

Here's a perfect example of derogatory/condescending language aimed at Asians, as though he's speaking to colonial 2nd class citizens.

He thinks his comment is funny and inocuous, but in fact he reveals his innate sense of superiority and racial derision.

I hope the Asians on this board wake up to this B@#$S@IT and stop accepting this type of ethnic humiliations.

The sad thing is that most Asians won't hit back when some A$SWIP3 like @qwerty opens his mouth.

@qwerty  - With all due respect, F@#$@ YO#.....
I doubt you'd say that to my face.. and if you are open to that..
.... DM me.

@freedomcm -  "You are joking?  Folks are always complaining about south county being too white, Santa Ana being too Mexican/hispanic, south LA Compton etc being too black. " ----

I think you're mistaking discussions amongst friends and acquaintenances (in passing) vs a NON CHALANT PUBLIC discussion about how the population growth of (MINORITY GROUP) is becoming a problem in (CITY).

I ask that you point me to a public forum (like this) or any other online discussion that "normalizes" how there are too many whites, blacks/ hispanics.. etc...
I COULD BE WRONG, BUT I DON'T THINK IT EXISTS.

... and I welcome you to start a thread based on this topic and wait for their respective RIGHTS groups to label you a "racist".

I agree, it has improved alot.  But for some reason, maybe due to the success of Asians in America, maybe due to their cultural passivity in politics, Asians are still subject to derisive jokes, puns, stereotypes, unlike ANY OTHER RACE/ETHIC GROUP.

If all fair was fair, then open the flood gates across the board - all ethnic groups.  I'm for that...
.... but because Asians are the only group allowed to be ridiculed w/o any consequnce, that's where I have to PUSH BACK and ask WTF..

And this thread, asking "Can Irvine become too Asian?" is a prime example of this kind of B.S. "public" display of CASUAL marginalization of Asians.

The sad thing is that "some" Asians are buying into it w/o even knowing it...
So I hope YOU wake up about this...

Bigotry = intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself.

qwerty didn't really display bigotry.  Qwerty made a sarcastic remark that an attempt at humor and was at most, trolling and offensive.  The irony is your response, actually does show bigotry as you appear to be intolerant to Qwerty based on what you perceive as an opinion or belief.

You state that people wouldn't say things like that about white people, yet it frequently happens when referring to white people.  Do you live in a cave?  If you haven't gotten the alert, it's apparently PC to be racist against white people.  I'm not saying that is okay or not okay.  Basically you are offended because asians are treated like white people in this instance.

Perfect would have nothing to do with race and a lot to do with culture.

@irvinexxx - id tell you to your face, except in 6? tall and you are 5?4?. So I can?t look you in the face. I guess I could squat down and tell you to your face.

I?m not just superior to you, im superior to everyone. Get it right. It probably won?t make you feel any better but I put down all races, all ethnicities. I have white, Persian, Asian and black friends. I make fun of them all the time. You need to get some tougher skin to play on the Internet.

I would just ask you to make me a taco.  ;)

More than what is being said , it is the tone and who is saying it ..  QWERTY was obviously saying it in jest , most people got it and laughed alongside .

We all have friends of different ethnicities and we make fun of each other all the time , doesn?t mean we are being bigoted . Many of my best friends actually have mixed heritage and you should see the jabs their parents throw at each other , again all in good humor .

But If it was a corporate CEO in the presence of his colleagues in a staff meeting ,  it then sets a dangerous tone and precedent . That?s when we get to the toxic impact of old boys club on opportunities for other minorities .

Context matters . A lot .
