The Investigation

@ double L

?In case you haven't heard, the New York Times reported on Saturday that Trump's former foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos, the guy who copped a plea in exchange for cooperation with Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, got drunk in a London bar in May of 2016 and spilled to the Australian High Commissioner to Britain, Alexander Downer, that the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton.?

That would have been less than a month after Papadopoulos first heard that Russia had emails that would embarrass the former secretary of state from Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese professor with contacts in the Russian ministry of foreign affairs. And it was months before the release of the DNC emails in July, which evidently prompted the Aussies to alert the FBI about Papadopoulos' loose-lipped blather. It was then that the U.S. government opened a formal investigation into just what in the hell was going on with the Trump campaign and Moscow:

It was not, as Mr. Trump and other politicians have alleged, a dossier compiled by a former British spy hired by a rival campaign. Instead, it was firsthand information from one of America?s closest intelligence allies.

Interviews and previously undisclosed documents show that Mr. Papadopoulos played a critical role in this drama and reveal a Russian operation that was more aggressive and widespread than previously known. They add to an emerging portrait, gradually filled in over the past year in revelations by federal investigators, journalists and lawmakers, of Russians with government contacts trying to establish secret channels at various levels of the Trump campaign.?

A must read article. Talks about the ?five eyes? spying alliance. (Its like Jason Borne stuff)

And BTW , it doesn't take a STABLE GENIUS to figure out that these so called "investigations" into Clinton Foundation and Steele Dossier author are started purely out of spite and massive pressure on the Sessions DOJ by Trump.  This looks weak , and not something "earth shattering. " or  "backfiring on dems " .  If you look at the news cycle , these are buried deep below Trump's self inflicted wounds .

Sounds like we're all in agreement!

Very convenient that we can keep this thread open for the next investigation!

Not only that, but the author of the Steele Dossier may now be under investigation, as Senators Grassley/Graham have just referred him to the DOJ.

This whole Russia conspiracy is starting to backfire on the Democrats big time.

Steve Bannon is subpoenaed in Muller?s Russia investigation. To testify in front of a grand jury.

?Special counsel Mueller indicts 13 Russians with interfering in 2016 U.S. election

Thirteen Russian nationals have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of interfering in the 2016 presidential election ? including supporting Donald Trump's campaign and "disparaging" Hillary Clinton, special counsel Robert Mueller announced Friday.

The indictments ? part of Mueller's ongoing investigation ? are the first tied directly to Russian meddling in the race for the White House.

"Some defendants, posing as U.S. persons and without revealing their Russian association, communicated with unwitting individuals associated with the Trump Campaign and with other political activists to seek to coordinate political activities," the indictment says.

Some of those charged also "posted derogatory information" about candidates in the Republican primaries, including Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, and supporting Bernie Sanders and Trump. By the time of the general election, the Russians' efforts included "supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J. Trump and disparaging Hillary Clinton," the indictment says.?

?WASHINGTON ? A California man illegally provided hundreds of bank account numbers to a Russian operation that used social media platforms to sow political discord around the 2016 presidential election, the special counsel investigating Moscow?s interference in the 2016 election revealed on Friday.

The man, Richard Pinedo of Santa Paula, Calif., pleaded guilty this week to identity fraud, according to a statement of offense. Other documents unsealed by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, show that Mr. Pinedo?s plea supported the indictment of 13 Russian nationals and three Russian organizations, which also was revealed on Friday.

Mr. Pinedo operated a company between 2014 and December 2017 that procured American bank account numbers to sell to clients, according to court papers. The company, Auction Essistance, provided services ?designed to circumvent the security features of large online digital payment companies.?

Mr. Pinedo ?frequently? bought and sold account numbers with people he knew were outside the United States, according to the statement.?

My comment: Someone from Cali is taking a plea deal. What was this person thinking in the first place?

So which of the following is Mueller's greatest success so far?

1) George P. pleads guilty to lying.

2) Gen. Flynn pleads guilty to lying.  (Although a new judge has been assigned and this plea might change.)

3) Manafort/Gates charged with laundering money and not registering as foreign agents in 2006.

4) 13 Russians charged with identity theft, bank fraud, and purchasing Facebook ads.

I like how when Russians obtain fraudulent IDs and SSNs they?re charged with a crime, but when illegal aliens do it they?re ?dreamers?.

THIS COMMENT SAYS IT ALL . This is the corrosive effect trump has had on his followers

On one hand you have people (let?s not even call them children or dreamers lest someone cry  ?gotcha ?) coming to this country to create a better life for themselves , struggling . They go through exploitation and abuse in many cases , including at the hands of racists .

Then you have a well organized and well funded attack on our country?s sovereignty by an outside hostile foreign power , you the know the same one , Raegan used to rail against .

Any other day , we would call this TREASON , especially if the other party held such views . But here , the echo chamber will rise up to defend such nasty views .

All the people throwing up and becoming ?sick? because someone dare raise the issue of controlling access to AR 15s , will now be silent . Again , this attitude says all you need to know

There will be a ton of brickbats thrown at me after this post , but for you, the casual reader of this forum / thread , this is a very instructive post into the mindset of the right wing today

The other thread I posed on the article from the Atlantic couldn?t have been more timely

It's a toss up between Flynn and Manafort since they previously worked as foreign agents and were already connected with Russia.  Flynn's son is up to no good so who knows how much he will squeal to protect his family. You don't plead guilty to a lesser crime unless you know you've done something much worse and have been caught.

My guess this is going to lead back to Jared and the Mercers. Trump was probably too clueless and thickheaded to think he needed anyone's help to win the election.

?George W. Bush: 'Clear evidence Russians meddled' in election

Former president George W. Bush appeared to take aim at President Trump on Thursday when he said at an economic summit that there was "pretty clear evidence that the Russians meddled" in the 2016 U.S. election.

"Whether (Russia) affected the outcome is another question," Bush said. "It?s problematic that a foreign nation is involved in our election system. Our democracy is only as good as people trust the results."

Intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia meddled in the presidential election, and numerous investigations are underway to determine whether Trump?s campaign aided the Kremlin. Trump has consistently disputed allegations of Russian interference in the race or that members of his campaign team in any way "colluded" with Moscow.

It wasn't the first time Bush has spoken publicly about alleged Russian interference in the election. In an address in New York last year, he said: "The Russian government has made a project of turning Americans against each other."
