Irvine man, 24, arrested in father’s stabbing death

City News ServiceJanuary 15, 2023 at 11:17 a.m.
A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder for allegedly fatally stabbing his 69-year-old father in the Irvine home they share, authorities said.

The death occurred on Windwood in the Woodbridge community, according to Sgt. Karie Davies of the Irvine Police Department.

Bruce Shipper failed to show up for work and a coworker went to the residence to check on him Saturday morning, Davies said. Police said the man’s son, Tyler Shipper, answered the door, appeared disheveled and would not let the coworker inside.

The coworker called 911, resulting in officers and Orange County Fire Authority firefighters responding, she said. Officers found Bruce Shipper inside the home.

“It appears Tyler and the decedent are the only residents at the location,” Davies said. “Tyler did not appear to be injured and the motive remains under investigation.”

A knife suspected of having been used in the stabbing was recovered at the scene, she said.

Shipper was arrested on suspicion of homicide.

Irvine police urged anyone with information regarding the incident to call them at 949-724-7098.

The study, titled Top 10 Safest Cities in California With Best Quality of Life 2023, was released this month and the ranking of cities was based on three of the following criteria: violent-crime rate, property crime rate and total crime rate.

Rancho Santa Margarita recently took the number one spot as the safest California city to live in, the report said. Aliso Viejo and Yorba Linda took the number six and seven spot respectively, and San Juan Capistrano took the number nine spot.

It's not even top ten.
Safest city is always sort of a mystery because it depends on what you are reading and what is the criteria. According to City of Irvine and FBI data (not sure how they sourced that), Irvine is still safe:

That was last October, so we will see later this year.

Just a google search comes up with various different safe city lists... some in FL, some in KY... I would imagine AK would be safe. :)

Irvine is excluding property crimes and cities under 250k in population which would exclude the rest of OC, aside from Anacrime and Stabba Ana.

Incidents like the Asian dog owner that was attacked in Irvine a couple years ago don't count as aggravated assault if there's not a deadly weapon involved, and hence, don't seem to get counted in the FBI "violent crime" stats.
