7 circles members... I need your help

So, I somehow got the motivation to clean up the backup G-ride today. I think it was inspired by an ad for a bike trailer, and how many 40s, blunts, 3 year olds and/or ponies I could pack in there, and avoid the duiy, if ya know what I mean...

The issue lies in the gear shifter. I have a Shimano Altus ST-CT90 shifter (I think), which thanks to google, is a POS. Anyway, it will only shift between two gears, and the front hub shifter is dead. Now, I am a mechanically inclined guy, and I played with the derailleur and I got how it worked, but it wasn't the problem... it has to be the shift pod. I took it apart too, and I understood how it worked, but got pissed because I couldn't figure out how to adjust it. When I put it back together I realized I messed things up some more, as the numbers do not align up like the used to. At this point with the heat and being tired/pissed/frustrated, could be the reason why I messed that up, and I have the sunburn to show for it. What I noticed when it was apart, was it was still well greased up, and since it hasn't been used that can't be the blame for the issue.

So... are there any suggestions, or more bicycle mechanically inclined IHBers willing to show me WTF the issue is? Sure, I could go buy a new shifter, but that will only discourage me from getting the g-ride up and running. I could also go take it to a shop, but if I can figure out how to fix a $400 climate control system for $16, do a complete disc and brake job, replace oxygen sensors, and replace an idle control valve in a bimmer, then there is no way in hell I am letting some stupid bike win. I am willing to trade for car mechanical for bike mechanical. Especially if you have a bimmer, because I have some special tools and extra parts.

I did go for a ride through the hood though. It was a good ride, and I got to go through a condo complex with a lot of open houses and a lot of foreclosures. Next time I will stop by and annoy the Realturds about how there are open houses, yet so many in foreclosure. "You do know about the foreclosures in the complex don't you? You do read IHB, and graphrix's foreclosure updates... right?" But, I could use some more road friendly tires, as the mountain bike tires are great for trying to run over the rabbits in my yard, but the street is not as friendly.

Oh... and one last thing... I know the 7 circles has had an issue with bimmer drivers in the past, but OMG... I almost got hit by a prius driver, not once, but twice by two different drivers. Jeezus, do they all come with the same medicine cabinet as Al Gore's son? If so... I need to buy one.

Hey graph, I'm glad to see you're getting with the program. All the cool kids are riding. I can't help you with repairing your bike, but there are many members of the club who will be happy to advise. In the meantime, grab a copy of this:

Graph, take it back to Walmart

Or, it sounds like the Cable tension to your rear Derailleur is off...

Put the chain on the Larg ring on the front and smallest in the back, don't mess with the upper and lower limit screws...

Then, adjust the cable tension by loostening the Cable clamp on the DA and pull it through a bit more, you can do fine adjustments afterwards by winding the hollow screw that the cable passes through, wind it out for more tension, in for less...1/4 turn at a time as you wind the pedals with the back wheel off the ground...

If all else fails, your local Bike shop will do a DA tune-up for $20.

Or go to Park Tool for instructions they have a lot of great repair resources there...

Luckily, Walmart never sold GTs, so I can't take it back there.

Thanks for the tips Petah! I pretty much played around with what you are talking about, but I will have to add moving the chain to the locations you suggest and being a bit more aggressive.

Also, thanks for the website. They need to learn about key words, like Brightwater in Huntington Beach, to have it come up in googling.

I will keep you all updated on the follies of the g-ride. Hopefully I can fix it myself, as it is more an ego thing than the $20 thing.

Or, it sounds like the Cable tension to your rear Derailleur is off?

I do believe Peter is correct.... if I was closer, I'd fix it for you ! I worked in a bike shop in my younger days... used to put 4 or 5 of those suckers together each day. Back in the day, Shimano was the sh*t ! Started cutting Campy right out of the market.

Yeah, it is the cables. They are just old and need to be replaced. The front line is near impossible to reach with a normal allen wrench. Anyway, I am probably going to suck it up, and take it to a shop to tune up and replace the cables. Damn you IHB! You were supposed to save me money.

Now the question is do I take it to Performance Cycle in the marketplace or Rock n' Road in Irvine or Anaheim Hills? RnR will do a tune up service for $60 plus the cost to replace the cables. In the mean time I still went for a 10 mile ride today, okay more like 5 mile ride, but with only two gears 5 miles feels like 10 miles. At least it will help get me stronger faster, so that I am only 2 miles behind the 7 circles members instead 10 miles behind.

G, once those cables get rusty they're toast. Don't feel bad, the average person would have no clue how to fix this...you'll probably need new housing too. It'll make your bike look all shiny and new. :)

Good for you for getting out on the bike !

Take it to Performance at the Marketplace.

Those dudes will fix it for cheap.

They always tighten and fix my clips for free.

And please don?t stray off into the lycra shorts section.

Hey Ten,

I didn't know you were a cyclist. Why don't you come ride with the IHB hotties? Perhaps you're afraid we'd drop you?

I follow your thread and if I had the time I would ride with you.

For a fact I wouldn?t be able to hang with Peter.

The most I?ve ever done was 50 miles.

Doing a Century is out of the question.

You could probably take me on the run.

I?ve only been able to do 13, nowhere near a full 26.

Doing a Century is not out of the question. You could train with us. PeterUK is a brilliant coach, but kind of a git. As for time, I'm sure it's difficult for you to get up early on a Sunday morning after too much goose the previous evening, but we all manage to rock the night before and ride the next day.

What kind of bicycle do you have?

You guys are warriors!

I?ll give you that

From what I?ve read Peter seems like an excellent coach.

He?s got true passion so I?m sure he ignites the fire in everyone around him.

As for my bike, I?m almost afraid to say because you?ll rip me.

It gets no love from you guys on that thread.

[quote author="profette" date=1214973921]OMG, it must be a Cannondale.

Cringe

You guys show no mercy!

Btw, you gotta love Graph.

The guy skips over my helpful comment but can?t click the thanks button fast enough after you take a shot at me.

Either he?s not a fan of Good Charlotte or he?s upset because I commented that wealthy kids from Villa Park should attend private schools like Mater Dei over public ones.

Those were the only comments I made today.

This is not about graph, so don't change the subject. At least he is making an effort. You, on the other hand, claim to be a cyclist, but you are finding lame excuses not to ride. You have a bike. You have hinted that you are reasonably fit. Why not ride with the 7 C's? Where's the loyalty to your blog?

I wasn?t ripping Graph, just said he was quick on the thanks button while ignoring me.

What more can I say?

I?m a fan of the 7 C?s, follow your thread and probably need to work on being more loyal.

If I could fit the ride into my schedule; I would join you guys.

Couldn?t we do a 7 C?s group spin class?

Peter could lead it, you select the music and after an hour we?d be done.

Reasonably fit, ha!

That?s like calling an Abercrombie model average looking.

Dude, I clicked the thanks button, mainly because I know to stay away from the lycra section. Is your day complete now?

Luckily for Ten, Prof for some reason is being nice today. But, she does have a point, you have more excuses than Mystic Tan appointments. Bro, just cut back to 3 times a week from your current 5 times, and you could have some time to ride. Or, are you just intimidated in meeting the hot prof?

The Mystic Tan comment was hilarious.

The fact that you initially ignored my comment is entirely forgivable.

The fact that you attended public school while living in a predominately affluent neighborhood = Cardinal Sin.

Dream on Prof

Nice try, PeterUK. But clever editing can't disguise the fact that you ride a Cannondale. Everyone who follows the adventures of the 7 C's knows I'm loyal to Felt. As a service to the blog, I will provide a .jpg of your bike. Gaze upon the horror of Pete's ride:
