Will Amazon choose Irvine?

I'm sure Bezos already has his location picked out and is using this "bidding process" as leverage against his chosen locale.  The same thing happens in the NFL and NBA and he's just using their same model to pass the development cost onto the "lucky" taxpayers of whatever city he has already chosen.

Same model as the NBA and NFL? The taxpayers will vote to approve taxes to be used to build a new stadium. In this case Amazon's second headquarters. I say that won't happen. But potentially taxpayers monies might be used to subsidized the package it gives Amazon.

Yes, just like Wisconsin and Foxxcon, what's the running rate on that 'deal'? A little over a million dollars per job in government benefits

Apple just secured $200m of tax breaks to open a 50-person data center in Iowa.  That's $4m in tax breaks per job created.

Companies have figured out that local governments are willing to overpay to bring new jobs to their states/cities.  Amazon is simply doing what other tech companies have done recently by asking which municipalities will overpay the most, and letting them bid on it.  It's just that Amazon is being a lot more public about it because they figure the publicity will help secure an even more disgusting deal for their shareholders.

the tax breaks the apples and other companies  receive don't do any harm to the cities unless there are companies willing to move there and pay the taxes in full. In the Iowa apple example, about 190M is in property tax abatements. Unless Apple took the place of some other company that was willing to pay a portion or all of the 190M, Iowa is no worse off but they got 50 high paying jobs.

Sounds like veterans are thinking Irvine may be stalling to have Amazon take over that parcel.  Not nearly enough space there I think.

"Reports that local developers like the Irvine Company and Five Points are trying to attract Amazon to site its headquarters in Irvine also has veteran leaders speculating publicly whether there are plans to switch land parcels on them once again for another commercial interest."

I just happened to be browsing the City of Irvine website this morning and noticed this news which was just posted today:

"The City of Irvine today has sent in its formal proposal to Amazon for its second world headquarters, nicknamed Amazon HQ2."
http://www.cityofirvine.org/news-media/news-article/amazon-hq2-bid

Check out the video they made. They're really pushing for this:

You can view their proposal by visiting either of those links above.

There is a whole section about tax incentives in the 150 pages doc. Don't know much about it so can't comment on how "good" the incentives are.

The Irvine Spectrum is being offered-up as the site of HQ2, with TIC willing to finance the 8,000,000 sqft. for Amazon, according to the proposal.

If I was Amazon, I'd disqualify Irvine because they named their pdf *_final_v2.pdf

Not possible to have a final v2.  It's either final or it's not.  Their submission is already an oxymoron.  OUT of the running Irvine!

Cheaper workforce in both Austin and Atlanta... no brainer.
But we got.... the weather, lol

Also same time zone for hq1!

That's pretty much it,...

But 50k jobs averaging $100k (according to that link). That's a ton of money every year to whatever city gets it

Irvine Spectrum!? How is there space over there? I thought campus means large chunk of land with 2 or 3 story buildings spread out on 1 giant piece of property. Bren from what it looks like want to have it all spread out in high rises.
Why not just build ginormous skyscrapers and just stuff em in there and call it a day. I thought he was going to offer vacant land, not sure what?s left big enough. Guess I was way wrong.

My money would be on
#1 Boston or
#2 Chicago.
It?s all about the talent. Incentives are just a bonus.

Everyone else is a dark horse.
I think Austin and New York have legit shots.
Irvine or LA possible too.

Atlanta has no shot at all.

BOSTON... Their ideal location is sourcing great talent and offering a great environment for new millennials to flourish. Unfortunately The OC is not considered a top talent sourcing zone for millennial. In fact the OC has declining millennial population that is migrating to places like Austin and Denver. Although there are many great companies in the OC, sadly most of the talent here is imported.

For a company like Amazon that wants to dominate the retail world, it can afford to have city mayors become enslaved in order to meet their requirements and any city will bend their rules for Amazon. It was done for Walmart and Costco during the ?Eminent  Domain? era of the 1990s and 2000s. Cities will demolish homes for Amazon!!
