Dear California Wine drinkers,

2006 wine grape production was 5.75 million tons. And most of that production isn't on this list. The only real wine region is the four letter word they don't want you to know about - Lodi. 20% of California's production comes from this God forsaken place, but why let the facts get in the way of a good story? The math don't work out so good when you figure out how many cases come out of Napa and Sonoma, and how much production they can get out of that region. When was the last time you saw a bottle of Lodi wine, and where do you think those grapes are going? Here's a hint - you're probably drinking it right now.

My suggestion is that you figure out what grows well in a certain locale and drink that. Temecula makes awesome Italian varietals. Amador County makes California's best Zins. Paso Robles makes decent Cabernets, zins, and Italian varietals. And Santa Barbara makes...a decent merlot and vigoner.

Nobody in California makes a good pinot anymore unless you like over oaked glasses of ripe cherry juice that have so much alcohol you have to really consider switching to cocktails as an alternative. Damn that movie Sideways!

Now you made me go look at my past consumption and, that I know of, I have drank only seven bottles from the Central Valley (Lodi, Alta Mesa, and Clarksburg appellations to be specific). The 2007 Scribner Bend Fiano Novatino (Clarksburg) was enjoyable. I don't know if it would be considered "good" because I had no experience with the Fiano grape. The 2007 Fenestra Torront?s Silvaspoons (Alta Mesa) was also quite enjoyable and reminded me a dry muscat. Again, I don't know if it would be considered "good" because I had no experience with the Torrontes grape.

There are two people who have me chomping at the bit to go wine tasting in Lodi: Thomas Coyne and Jeff Runquist. Coyne, for his 2005 Vino Tinto Reserva (a really wonderful blend of 5 Portuguese varietals: Touriga, Tinta Roriz, Grenache, Sousao, and Trousseau), and Runquist for his 2007 Touriga Nacional Silvaspoons.

FWIW, Weins in Temecula sources their Dolcetto (which I liked) from Lodi.

Given how hot it gets out there, though, you are looking at high alc wines almost across the board.

Hey Eva! Can you take this over to the wine thread? I really want to know more about these "low alcohol" wines. I love wine, but the older I get, the less I can handle it the next day, so this sounds good!

I can not think of anything that I want to say that I would not or have not said.

And I do not know much about Temecula.

I can't stop.

To people in general: The word "Jew" should not be an insult. Calling someone "Christian" is a compliment in some circles, but "Jew" has a negative connotation. This is so wrong.

To Jessica Simpson: You're not a "mom" because you have a dog. I'm sorry your maltipoo was eaten by a coyote, but having a dog and having a child is not the same.

Ports, desert wines, and "fillers". It's just as hot in Paso Robles as in Galt or Lodi - the difference is it's 15-20 degrees cooler in Paso at night than Galt. It can be another 20 degrees warmer in still in Fresno or Bakersfield.

Dear wall-eyed coworker,

Please forgive me for seeming uncomfortable when we speak to each other face-to-face. The problem is, I can't figure out which is your "good eye" so I find myself easily distracted during the course of conversation. It would help if you gave me some indication but it doesn't feel right to ask.

Dear Thirty-Something Friends of Mine,

I am tired of shelling out bukoo bucks to attend your lavish parties. If you can not afford to pick up the tab to throw a $5,000 bachelorette party for your friend don't do it. Guests should never be expected to spend hundreds of dollars to attend a party. It's tacky and inconsiderate especially to our friends that don't have the funds to come out with us.

Cheers,

Yes and no. Can't say too much because my "bee - oh - ess - esss" reads this site occassionally! PM sent. :)

Oh geez SoCal, you and I must be related because your male relative HAS to be related to my niece. Stopped doing loans or gift cash quite a few years ago... when she's really in a pickle. TJ's gift card so that I know she has food.
Dear young male relative,

Please stop contacting me repeatedly for money. The only time I hear from you is when you need more. I?m sorry you lost your job but it might be easier for me to sympathize had you not bought a brand new vehicle right before relocating here (which you committed fraud on your loan application to get) and also taken a 6-month long vacation upon arrival. I tried telling you back then that you could not afford to waste time and should hit the ground running but you didn?t listen. Even so, when things got rough and you came to me for help, I gave you more than you asked for, confidant that you had learned something and were on your way. I was very disappointed to get your recent call that you were careless? you let your new car set on a red curb, it was towed, and now you can?t afford the impound fee to get it back. Things are so bad you had to (*gasp*) sell your surfboard. I am insulted that you are asking me to bail your new vehicle out of the yard. I honestly feel it would be in your best interest to not get it back. In the next breath, you tell me you?re going to default on the payments soon anyway so? why should I throw my money at this problem again? And yes, I know it made you uncomfortable living with a male model for a roommate but that is no excuse to stop rooming with him and think you can afford to go it alone because you ?deserve? better? not in this economy and not with your lack of responsibility. You have 75 cents in your checking. You can not afford to be picky! Do you not get it? I do not totally blame you because you are very young and have a lot to learn yet. You?re a good guy but this is one of those times you have to learn to stand on your own two feet. So, please. Stop using the phrase, ?Gotta take care of #1!?. It?s really obnoxious and reminds me that you only care about putting your needs before others. Please take my hint when I say I won?t help financially this time. Also, don?t beg after I?ve said no. It?s embarrassing.

Regards,

SoCal

One: this conversation really belongs in the politics thread.

Two: your statement was vague enough to include everyone from my apolitical mother to skek; the problem with your clarification of your prior intent is that you referenced a member of these forums rather than anyone working for FNC, and therefore strains credulity.

Three: Sweden is an existing Socialist Democracy, providing instant happiness and contentment for those who feel that their kind of government better suits their temperament, which is doubtlessly less frustrating than trying to reinvent the United States Constitution... or shipping Republicans off to internment camps.

Four: I don't really care. Anyone who thinks eliminating opposing view points is preferable to free speech and acceptance of others has larger problems than can be solved by a snarky jerk on the internet.
I have another one.

Dear annoying Facebook friend:

Please stop writing daily status messages about how you are enjoying your life in "beautiful wine country Temecula California." Which is literally how you write it, with no punctuation. Example: "A is enjoying the 90 degree weather in beautiful wine country Temecula California." Or "A is having a wonderful day in beautiful wine country Temecula California." These daily updates are really unnecessary and redundant. Also, I really think that the Napa Valley is the proper wine country, not Temecula.[/qu

I don't know, I think Paso might surpsass Napa at some point. Temecula? Not beautiful and their wines really suck! OK, there is that one sparkling white that is quaffable, but still overpriced compared to some of the Cavas or Prosecos you can get for less.

Sorry No-Vas, but there are some good Pinot's out of Santa Barbara County. Are they Burgundies? Hello no, but there will never be a PN outside of Burgundy that can compare. Paso does have good zins, but their Rhones are really what makes the area stand2 out. Lodi grapes? Where do you think that $2 buck chuck gets grapes from? Napa is soooo overpriced for what you get.

One: yes, it does belong there, but the original poster (not me) was addressing the thread topic.

Two: Sorry for the missing "t" on the word "the", I guess that didn't make any sense at all. Again, the original referenced post was not my own, I just agreed when it came to some of the same things you seem to have problems with (from one of your posts in the healthcare thread). The intention of mentioning WINEX was merely a joke, which I'm sure you understand, I actually liked the guy.

Three: Once again, the original post was not mine. But Sweden does sound nice.

Four: I really don't care either, that's mostly why I'm able to tolerate a lot that goes on here, it's really just fun. I prefer free speech also.

FIVE: You really crack me up.

Watch out, you missed a "d" on that and. I think I'm reading Nude correctly in believing that he really isn't a FOX news guy. I hope I'm not wrong. I second this statement. I had never heard of Torrontes until I picked up a bottle from Argentina at Wine Exchange as an "alternative" white from Chardonnay. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. It was herbaceous but not grassy like a sauviginon blanc, and fruity but not overwhelmingly like a viogner can be. I also picked one up at Costco that was just as good. It is an acquired taste, but if you liked it the first time you had it (the uniqueness of it will come through no matter where it is from), then you will like other bottles of it.

FWIW, I have been watching some wine/food shows with Cayci and New York wines are supposed to be lower in alcohol. Cayci and I are thinking about checking some of the wineries out on our next NYC trip sometime in the Fall of next year. They seem very reasonably priced for the accolades they receive. We plan on maybe finding some here to try or ordering some online first before we make our way out there.
Sorry No-Vas, but there are some good Pinot's out of Santa Barbara County.

Not anymore. The last good pinots I drank out of Santa Barbara county were from the El Nino years of '97 and '98 (those were awesome), and about 13.2-13.8% alcohol. The last one I got was almost 16% (can you find one that?s less than 15% anymore?) - no good! Please see Eva's psuedorant about high alcohol wines. If we get a cold, damp growing season with production off 15% YOY from what they've had the last couple of years, I might change my mind, but for right now no way.

Certainly they are selling, and people are drinking them, but they aren't any good IMO.
