You can also reserve the DVD online. That way it's guaranteed to be there when you go to pick it up.
Good point.

One time I was in line to rent a movie and it was taking so long and I knew which one had it because of the Redbox app (they usually have 2 kiosks, an A and a B) so I brought up the app to reserve it except it was not there anymore. I realized that the person who was hogging the kiosk had just rented it.

I was irritated not because I missed out, but had I reserved it just a minute earlier, I could have prevented the Redbox Hog from renting it.  >:D

Sorry.

But I have to laugh too because I can picture you in front of the kiosk saying "But IHO made it sound so easy."

It gets better as you get used to it.

I find reserving ahead of time easier... as all I do is swipe my card they have on my account and it gives me the movies... no touchy/typey.

All kidding aside, that is EXACTLY what I said out loud right before my 11 minute, 17 second call to RedBox customer service!

I got there. Nobody behind me in line. Looked through the limited Blue Ray menu selection for Dallas Buyers Club. Didn't see it. Searched alphabetically. Found it. It only showed it in regular DVD format. Put it in my cart. Checked out. Done. Too easy, right?

I decided that just didn't seem right that they didn't have it in Blue Ray, or rather, had so few selections in Blue Ray. Searched again. One person behind me in line. Found it in Blue Ray. WTH?!!

Returned my first disc immediately back to the slot. 2 people now behind me. Done. But now I have 2 charges, one for each.

Checked out DBC in Blue Ray. Done.

My boy tells me we don't have Blue Ray.  :o  :( Maybe he's right. Crap. I might need to do this all over again.

Call customer service number on the box to ask if they can quickly refund the charge for the 1st disc. Oh, what an ordeal. I am positive the guy was patronizing me. He was talking s-o s-l-o-w-w-w. And his computer was running so slow, too. First name. Last name. 9 digit disc number - the wrong disc, I might add. He wouldn't listen to me. Name on credit card. Account holder's name (WTH? Does it matter?) Oh, now the account holder's name doesn't match what I said it did. Is my name my real name, he asks? Do I have any "other" names? (Like what?!) Now what is my email address. Is that UPPER case or LOWER case? I said it doesn't matter, email is not case-sensitive! Now what are the last 4 digits on my card. Now let's get the name again. Spell it. Spell it again. (Not a hard to spell name for those who know my real name. Any idiot can spell it. Saying it's with a C and not a K is usually all that's needed.) Now he wants to put me on hold for 2 minutes so he can enter all this to get me a promo code instead of a refund! I said no. Absolutely not. Give me a refund. He can't do it that fast but he will give me a refund it's just going to take a long time and for some unknown reason I need to sit on hold for that. Well, I refuse to stay on the phone for another 12 minutes while standing in front of the RedBox. Told him I wasn't expecting such an ordeal for a small refund and 12 minutes was more than I expected to spend on the phone not to mention sufficient enough time to gather the info needed. If it doesn't show up on my CC statement, I'll be calling back. He kept talking. I said goodbye. He wouldn't stop. I had to hang up on him.

Now I have 1 disc. 2 charges. 20 minutes of my life gone that I can't get back. And 1 pending refund.  >:(

$6 on dish is sounding pretty good right about now :-)

That's why I'm always willing to pay for convenience. Look up a movie on direct tv, download in 1080 then in good to go

You really can't be on demand with the cable/satellite companies. Yeah it's a couple more dollars than what blockbuster used to be but saves a hell of a lot more time (and late charges)

Yeah, I'm regretting the whole experience. I had to do my big weekly grocery shopping trip anyway so I figured it would be easy enough to swing by while I'm there inside the store. Dear God. Good thing I didn't have cold stuff in my cart yet. I can't envision a time I'd want to use Redbox again. I'll just download it or wait until it's free on Netflix like I was going to do in the first place.  I just hate using the Ruko thing. It's kind of frustrating. After today, I can't imagine what Redbox is good for. Just games, maybe. And like Iho said, the picture is probably better quality with the disc. But then there's the return issue. During store hours, got to go inside, blah blah blah...

Depending on what kind of TV you have, you can get on demand rentals from other outlets like Vudu and Amazon.

You also get Chromecast or Roku to access those site.

Vudu/Amazon is also good because if you buy a DVD these days you can usually get an online copy free.

@SoCal

What happened to the guy behind you?  That's why I never use Redbox, usually get stuck behind newbies or a group of high schoolers with nothing else to do on a Friday/Sat night besides going thru the entire selection of movies in the machine.

If you have an Amazon account (especially Prime), get the new Fire TV, user friendly, fast, and most of all, does not require stepping out of the house.

Oh, each of my transactions was pretty quick. I moved out of the way for the customer service interrogation... and blocked the Coin Star people instead.

So funny.

You're like the person who was in front of me who I wanted to steal their rental from. :)

You could have actually done that all at home.

I mistakenly rented the wrong Hunger Games, returned it, rented the BluRay one and then when I got home, signed on to online chat with Redbox and they gave me credit for it.

It's okay, it's not for everyone. But it's very hard to beat $1.50 to rent BluRay. OnDemand for movies just released ranges anywhere from $5-$10 and is at best 1080i or 720p, so the trip to the grocery store where I'll probably be buying ice or water isn't an inconvenience. Plus I have 6 kiosks near me so I usually can find whatever I need as long as it's not the first week of release (Thor 2 was so hard to find the first weekend).

I do feel streaming is the future but it has to come down in pricing. I checked Amazon Instant and Vudu, and their prices run $5-$10 also for new releases. If they can get it down to $3 and 1080p, I'll probably ditch Redbox.

I don't like to pay Mello Roos or a higher fixed interest rate mortgage, so $3.50 is a big deal to me. :)

Hey, Iho. Do you know how long the rental period is? I went to their website to check but their link to the answer does not address the question.

As I stated above, you have to return it before 9pm or else they charge you another day.

Your rental period ends at 9:00 p.m. the day after you rent.

Want to hold onto your disc for longer?  No problem.  For each extra day you keep it, you'll be charged for another rental period + applicable tax.  If you hold onto your disc for the maximum rental period (21 days almost everywhere for DVDs), you'll be charged the maximum charge and the disc is yours to keep.  In most areas, those fees are $25.20 + tax for DVDs ($26.67 in Maryland), $34.50 + tax for Blu-ray Discs ($35.51 in Maryland) and $60 + tax for video games ($61.48 in Maryland).

I think you're pretending to be Amish... from what I recall, you have mad Internet skills.

P.S. I thought you do your grocery shopping online. ;)

Okay, sorry I don't have every TI post memorized.
There you go pretending to be Amish again.  :D

Too bad you didn't like the movie. Not only did you go through so much trouble to get it... but you didn't enjoy it either.

That's what we call an NPE... negative play experience.

Dallas Buyers Club: 2 / 5

Eh.
What was wrong with it?

Might have to cross that off my list.

We saw American Hustle a few weeks ago... 4/10.

I didn't think it was as good a movie as everyone said it was.
