I did a ride along in the LBC last year. I encourage all to do the same. The one thing my host made clear was how woefully understaffed the police were. The help of the national guard would free up the main force to enforce and not be overwhelmed every night which leads to overall ineffective policing. I would welcome the national guard in my town!

Militarized has a bad connotation. Think of it as cops with really big guns.

Every time I go to Asia and to a slightly lesser extent Europe, there is a certain peace of mind that I won’t be randomly shot. I generally feel safe here in OC in the areas that I’m usually in but it would be nice to have that general peace of mind that I’m not going to die by getting shot across the US
