Official IHB Dining Club

[quote author="irvinesinglemom" date=1215812675]Eva - I'll take you up on that offer! :) I'm on vacation next week (hiking in Utah!) and the week after I have my monthly facial scheduled at FaceLogic in the District...but August forward is looking very good. Any other ladies interested in a Wednesday evening IHB girls' night out? (Keep in mind I'm not talking about partying hard or anything... :red:</blockquote>

I'm on business trips for the next few Wednesdays in July, so August looks good for me!

Great to meet all of you! I had a great time - in spite of ordering exactly the same thing as Caycifish - and getting the exact same drink service!

Here's my proposal for the next get together:

Next weekend, on both Saturday and Sunday, <a href="http://www.bca-ocbc.org/Obon/2008Obon Festival_files/2008Obon Festival521.htm">the Orange County Buddhist Church is having their annual Obon Carnival</a>. It is kid friendly and inexpensive. Admission is free, so you only pay for food and any games. The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n-6KC2RdGQ">taiko</a> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-jQCnAsCEY&feature=related">dance performances</a> can be really cool. (Samples linked.) It would be somewhat disorganized and informal, but we could all agree to meet at the entrance on Saturday at 4:30 pm and maybe be able to have dinner together.

We went to the Obon Carnival at Zenshuji Temple in Little Tokyo yesterday (<a href="http://www.irvinehousingblog.com/forums/viewthread/2286/P50/#59117">see reference here</a>) and it was a really good time. If you have time today, I would really encourage you to go. It turns out that the Nishi temple (with its Japanese looking buildings) is only two block away and is having its Obon Carnival at the same time. Both are free to attend and the food and games are very affordable. One not need to be Buddhist or Japanese to attend. In fact, there was Mexican food offered at both along with the Japanese food. We had the beef dish at Nishi. I think Momo would have like it. Thick but manageable pieces of good quality grilled flank steak marinated in an incredibly yummy sauce. At Zenshuji, we had won tons, octopus balls (not to be confused with octopus testicles), dango (basically, donuts), and shaved ice. All were very good. If we weren't so full from the beef plate and won tons, we would have tried the udon. I saw a couple the bowls come out of the kitchen and they looked really good. All the dishes are freshly made that day. We didn't hit much traffic, but it was well worth the drive. This was the first time we went, and we definitely want to go again next year. They also offer a farmer's market of produce and flowers, and some of the church members own nurseries and sell plants.

Wow, that's nice. I know Wendy would definitely love that.

I'm still hankering for some good old fashion fried chicken....

"GATHERING OF JOY"

The Orange County Buddhist Church will observe Obon with services on July 13, Sunday. Odori (dancing), and a bazaar-carnival will be during the weekend July 19th and 20th. In Japan, Obon evolved from the religious custom of honoring the deceased with memorial services. During this time, comparable holidays are observed throughout the Buddhist world. A special service will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. Hatsubon Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in memory of those who have passed away since our last Obon in 2007.

The traditional Obon dance expresses joy for the teachings offered by the Buddha. The movements depict the livelihood of the villagers such as fishermen, coal miners, and farmers. Your participation with other temple dancers is welcome.

The bazaar-carnival will feature many games for the young and old. This year's raffle will offer many prizes. The drawing will be held on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.. Winners need not be present to win. We will have handicrafts and farm fresh produce at bargain prices. Delicious Asian dishes such as beef and chicken teriyaki, sushi, udon (Japanese noodles), won ton, chow mein, corn, teriburgers, oriental chicken salad, Okinawa Dango (donuts), Imagawa Yaki (Sweet bean dessert), oden, soft drinks, snow cones and other treats will be available.

The Hondo (sanctuary) will be open to any interested visitors and hosts from the Buddhist Education Center will be available to answer any questions. Books on Buddhism will be sold at the entrance of the Hondo.

The public is cordially invited to attend all events including participation in the Obon dances. Admission is FREE. The Orange County Buddhist Church is located at 909 South Dale Avenue, just north of Ball Road in Anaheim.

X_X Due to extended family obligations, I cannot show up on Sunday evening. Apologies! Hope you guys will still attend and have fun there!

Will make it up to you guys on another weekend with sweet potato pizza trip. ;p

[quote author="momopi" date=1217315059]I'm planning on a run to either Toji or Gardena Ramen this week, if anyone is interested. Since they're located in torrance, I don't plan to leave Irvine until at least after 6pm to dodge the traffic:

I could be down for Thursday if the fish is still up to heading out late on her week-end. We are lucky that we are close to the 91 (gawd... I never thought I would say that) and the later you head west on it the lighter the traffic is. Plus, that will give me time to watch the "how to eat ramen video" so I don't look like the cracker that I am.
