That brings up an interesting question: If you are transmitting voice data over 3G/4G, can't you also go on the web if you've got a good Wi-Fi signal? Can ICS do both at the same time?
Data will go over WiFi and you can do voice at the same time from what I recall.

It's not a limitation of the OS... it's a limitation of the carrier technology... iPhones on AT&T can do both voice/data, iPhones on VZW and Sprint cannot.

For instance, if I data tether on AT&T, I can receive a voice call and not interrupt my browsing on my notebook... but if I tether on my Sprint phone, when a call comes in, it takes precedence and the data is "paused" on my notebook until the call is over.

Verizon announced the HTC Thunderbolt back in January as their 1st 4G phone to offer SVDO service (simultaneous voice+data over CDMA). Since then HTC came out with the Rezound as Big Red's second phone to offer this feature when you are in a 3g EVDO network.

I thought that all other verizon 4g phones offer simultaneous voice+data when on a 4g network--data goes over 4g and voice going over the 3g/1x/CDMA network. Outside of the 4g network you get no simultaneous voice+data  unless on wifi or if you have the above phones. Is that not the case?

Eventually Verizon plans on implementing Voice over Data via 4G (Voice over LTE) alone but they are working out the kinks.

You could be right... voice over 3G, data over 4G... but I think the handset hardware has to implement it because I imagine there would be software/antenna requirements.

As for LTE (which does support SVD), I thought VZW was going to do that on Advanced LTE.

I don't know... trying really hard combing the gadget news outlets for anything exciting this morning... and coming up empty handed... maybe everything just pales in comparison to having ICS as a daily driver, or that literally everybody I'm trying to contact this morning is already on vacation, or... that everyone is gearing up for CES... I don't know... kinda quiet out there...

I'm working on a Cloud storage post but, I'm not feelin it either... I mean, I'm sure most of you already live mostly in the cloud too...  Gotta say tho, Music in the cloud this week really rocks...!

My music was the last frontier that made it into the cloud; seemed like everything else already had a cloud counter-part; but I'm from the old-school MP3 class, where we used to rip them tracks ourselves, upload them on napster or kazaa, then convert MP3s back to Wav tracks and burn them back onto CDs.  Then came Winamp, the laptop replaced the stereo, the infinite playlist, MP3 CD players came out, then MP3 portable players, we each had 10 different solutions on how to play MP3 in our cars, iPods and the rest was history.

I like to keep my music close and personal; I like it reachable and accessible when I need it, and even though I kind of had to start the entire collection over with the Android; I do not want to have to keep finding all my life sound-tracks every ten years with the advent of the next technology.

I'd heard of Google Music before, when it was in beta, but I didn't like the idea of having to upload all my music on some cloud, then having to download them again.  But with the G-Nex, I bit the bullet and did it; and since last week, I haven't look back one bit.

Now with 4G and an internet connection virtually wherever I go; there is no reason why I should have to store anything on my devices ever again.  And if I really want to, I can make certain tracks available off-line.  I love the idea of accessing my music from any web-browser; there are a ton of free tracks available everyday, and I just love how the program fills-in the missing cover art.  Google Music gives each account 20,000 tracks; which is more than enough; seeing how, half if my MP3s are actually hour long (50 megs+) radio programs.

A few other things that I like about Music, automatic playlist generators when you thumbs up a certain song and check out this album cover carrousel...

So I'm looking to get my first tablet (see thread -> http://www.talkirvine.com/index.php?topic=2196.0).  I was pretty sure I would get an Android tablet.  After asking some gadget/tech friends, they're suggesting to get an iPad (probably iPad 3).  My arguments for an Android tab is for the ability to customize the look/feel of the UI, availability of the many roms/devs for the devices and the opennes of the OS.  My friend is telling me that after 20 minutes of messing with devs, I'll go back to using the tablet in a more "normal" way.  The iPads "just work".  With a jailbroken iPad, I'm assuming I can do more things with it, but not sure what that is.  I'm not familiar with the App Market so I can't compare to the Android Market to determine the difference.  Another consideration would be cost.  The iproducts always cost more.

With all that said, what is the argument in going with an Android tablet vs the iPad 3?

JVNA... just reading up on some things you can do on a jailbroken ipad that you can't on a locked one...

seems like a lot to go through just to do what normal Android tablets can do out of the box, but I'm sure iPads get the job done...

Don't give up on the Transformer Prime.. take a look at the recent poll of people who already got it...!

About 50% people said the tab exceeded their expectations...!

Again from the post yesterday... Jeff from XDA predicts that Windows 8 Tablets would rule in 2012, "instantly making Android Tabs Obsolete..." and that is coming from a Android Fan & User...  I guess at the end of the day, we all have to ask what we really need our Tech to do; and like I said before, I know I can't completely move away from Windows, now using Windows 7 at work, and Android is Far from being a complete Desktop replacement, but I'm sure as heck going to try to do as much on Android and the cloud as possible...

I can't help but to think Google already have something to up it's sleeves in response to Windows 8, some combination HTML 5 based, Android & Chrome all rolled into one OS that would work on Mobile, Desktop & Tablets... can't wait to see what happens in 2012...

We do mobile app dev at work and I've played with a number of smart phones and tablet devices.  I own a Kindle Fire personally but most people at work use iPads.  It's a bit weird when you go to lunch with your coworkers and everyone just sit there with their iPads in hand.

Back in the 1980s, when fewer people knew how to use a computer, the original Mac/Mac+ was unique in a way that you can put someone who never used a computer before in front of one, and within 15 minutes they'd be clicking away without instruction.  There was a certain intuitive design factor with simplicity that just worked.  The competition from Commodore Amiga, Atari ST/GEM, GEOS, Windows, etc. just couldn?t match.  Unfortunately, as OS got bigger and more complex, the Mac eventually became complicated like everyone else.

The iOS is like a ?reboot? back to the early days of Macintosh, where things are made simple.  If you?re looking for a tablet that ?works?, most tablets will do what you need.  However what competitors lack is the man-machine interface that Apple has.  It?s simple, elegant, functional, and just works.  My 4 year old goddaughter figured out how to use the iPad by herself within 15 mins.

I don't own a "i" device so I guess I don't know.. what "just works" mean... if you guys mean -random- "force closes" here and there or that certain apps just aren't as polish, or that things aren't as one-track minded as Apple...?

My kid had no problems playing around with Android, and I really don't see how difficult Honeycomb is; it's pretty straightforward...

Now I always secretly admire Macs because they are always so pretty to look at; Graphics always looked better and sounds effects are just so realistic on Apple since the dawn of time; I know that is a huge part of it, but is that what you consider intuitiveness or -user friendly?

BTW.. a couple of iPad 3 news out this morning...

I can't imagine how much the High End model will cost..?

Couple of other Android news this morning...

Early build of CyanogenMod's 'Trebuchet' launcher available for Android 4.0.3 devices - looks very tempting and a merge of the things we loved on CM7; but it might be a while until I jump on board...

1 million Galaxy Notes shipped worldwide, US fans throw money at their screens - I totally didn't see this coming; that is a lot of devices... yes, the G-Nex is large enough, 5"+ would be too much...

I think the biggest problem with Android is really the fragmentation.

The UI is not consistent across phones and carriers... and the implementation is buggy depending on who the manufacturer is.

My Android phone reboots randomly every week, I have to force power cycle it periodically (just did it this morning because I had no internet access), force stop programs (caveat: I do occasionally need to X programs in iOS) and find the UI more laggy than iOS. Most of this is probably the manufacturer or the hardware but that's why the experience with iOS is more consistent.

I like the fact that Android keeps pushing out updates and new hardware comes out almost monthly... but not everyone likes the "PC" experience where your latest purchase becomes obsolete the next day. Stability and "just working" seems to be fine for many people.

If Apple allowed people to customize the feel of the UI (which lots of Android users love), would it feel fragmented?  Lots of themes/widgets/etc. so that everyone's experience is different?

I want my phone/tablet to work without much hiccups.  I want a great market where I can get the apps/games I want/need.  I want to be able to customize my device.  Being able to 'tweak' out more than what was intended on the device is a plus.

I'm hoping that I'll see some exciting developments come Jan 2012.
