Tesla is a good stock for the long term , as is Meta, for a simple reason that’s hard to comprehend for those without a deep understanding of what it takes to build high performing software teams: they both have huge teams of pretty much the highest caliber sw talent in the Valley. And Tesla has materials science geniuses as well. This is why no legacy automaker has a prayer of building a profitable EV business: EVs are about software and batteries and Tesla has all the best at both locked up.

I like my Tesla, I wish I worked there in 2018, but I dunno man, the stock is bonkers high. I think if the stock stops climbing, Tesla is going to have a *real* hard time keeping talent there. It's easy to work crazy hours and worship at the alter of Elon when your RSUs are 3x (or 10x) the grant price, but when they're more or less flat....

Meta, I dunno. They're the top paying FAANG, and have had great stock appreciation, but their AI is really far behind the other big players. Sometimes I wonder if what makes them so good at optimizing for certain types of software development, they're not so good at other areas.

Long term i'm bullish on the other FAANGs, and I think Microsoft will slowly become irrelevant in the software world. (But could be wrong there, they do have some good stuff).

I'm not diminishing the level of talent at Tesla, but from an investment standpoint I don't like their prospects. The high growth phase for the stock is over. It has been rangebound for 3-4 years. That's just the technical perspective. The fundamental perspective is they no longer have monopoly position in the EV market. Lots of legitimate competition will be coming online in the next 5-10 years. Warren Buffet's famous moat has been breached.

A painful lesson learned? I knew it all along. I feel sorry for the shareholders of these companies. They were led by fools.🤦🏽‍♂️😡😡😡👎🏽

GM Is Pushing Hard to Tank California’s EV Mandate

General Motors has begun urging employees to lobby lawmakers against ban on the sale of new gas cars in the state within a decade, something it once supported.

'We need your help!' GM wrote in an email to thousands of salaried workers

'Emissions standards that are not aligned with market realities pose a serious threat to our business by undermining consumer choice and vehicle affordability.'

The email comes as California’s tough climate regulations face growing resistance.

For years, the state has had a federal waiver allowing it to impose stricter tailpipe rules than the national standard.

If they crack self driving, or somehow find a way to charge customers for licensing fees (maybe possible? Old teslas are shockingly reliable, maybe people would pay money to get software updates), or they make a robot and license their tech or something, maybe the stock will shoot up again.

But as a car company, even if they kept a monopoly on EVs, I doubt we'll see much growth.

But they are more than just a car company aren't they?

The Model Y looks much nicer.

Tesla needs to innovate a bit more in their hardware designs since everyone loves their software.

Technologically, the CT is awesome, but aesthetically, it misses the mark for many.

They should have focused on a Model 2 since they have the production cost lead and then probably a 4 or U for a more midsize sedan or SUV. :)

I use FSD 90% of the time and it’s 90%+ autonomous. Sometimes it will mistake a right lane exit only lane as a regular lane but otherwise it handles everything. I drive up and back from San Jose frequently and it makes a huge difference.

Honda Downshifts on Its EV Goals Amid Trade, Sales Woes

Japanese automaker Honda is scaling back its once-ambitious electric vehicle investment and sales targets in light of changing emissions regulations and the unsteady international trade environment affecting the largest markets served by the automobile industry. At the company’s annual business briefing in Tokyo on May 20, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe revealed plans to erase nearly 30% of its original multi-trillion-Yen investments, dialing down its EV and software research and development budget from ten trillion yen (~$68.97 billion) to seven trillion yen (~$48.28 billion

“Dialing down software investments .” Why? No hope of ever building a team to compete with Tesla - it’s just wasted R&D investment. It’s not just UI but actual natively software controlled elements of the car. No automaker will ever be able to put together that kind of software talent. Ever. Difficult to comprehend if you’re not in the software industry.

right, it's impressive tech, but Waymo drives like an Italian cab driver on his fourth espresso. It's not 90% good, it's fucking *amazing*.
