The vast majority of subsidies are implicit, as environmental costs are often not reflected in prices for fossil fuels, especially for coal and diesel.

Our analysis shows that consumers did not pay for over $5 trillion of environmental costs last year. This number would be almost double if damage to the climate was valued at levels found in a recent study published in the scientific journal Nature instead of our baseline assumption that global warming costs are equal to the emissions price needed to meet Paris Agreement temperature goals.

Since their electric vehicle business needed a little retooling, during the COVID-19 pandemic BYD switched to manufacturing PPE and landed a massive $1.4 billion contract with the State of California in April 2020. That contract was controversial because it was a no-bid contract, then BYD failed to get NIOSH certification in time and failed to deliver the masks as scheduled. Newsom could have canceled the contract due to that, but he didn't... he just wired them more money, and waited - while his state was locked down.

Even with massive subsidies green projects are mostly unprofitable. Look at the Hess deal - investing in 11 billion bbls in Guyana not renewables.

The electric vehicle issue has always struck me as simple. If you want one, purchase one. I wish you well.

But the people who push those vehicles with relentless ferocity also believe that we can alter the climate by giving more power to people like themselves. In short, they lie. And they enlist others — tech companies, establishment media and even local police — to amplify the lie.

Thus, when they demand that we all switch to EVs, their demand alone amounts to mathematical proof that we must not.

Global oil demand to increase in 2024 – OPEC

LONDON (ICIS)–Total global oil demand is set to increase in 2024 after surpassing pre COVID-19 levels this year, with the bulk of consumption growth expected to come from China, India and the Middle East, OPEC said on Tuesday.

Total consumption is expected to hit 104.3m bbl/day next year from 102.1m bbl/day, the cartel said, with the pace of growth slowing slightly to 2.2m bbl/day compared to a projected 2.4m bbl/day this year.

The vast bulk of this demand is expected to come from Pacific and southern Asia along with the Middle East, set to comprise around 2m bbl/day of the total, with the remainder to come from the OECD, particularly OECD Americas.

Electric Vehicles No Magic Bullet For Curbing Oil Demand

Policymakers are counting on electric vehicles (EVs) to replace the traditional combustion engine and eliminate oil demand. But they desperately need a lesson in how the energy transition is playing out.

The truth is that data from countries with a high penetration of passenger EV sales do not show dramatic oil consumption declines.

The best evidence comes from Norway, where EVs accounted for 80% of total passenger car sales in 2021. At this rate, Norway could achieve nearly 100% EV sales by 2025.

But gasoline and diesel consumption rates have barely budged in the Scandinavian country.

Figures from Statistics Norway (SSB) show diesel and gasoline demand has declined only modestly since 2017. In the first half of 2023, road fuel sales hovered around 62,000 barrels daily, a 10% drop from the 70,000 sold between 2017 and 2019, well after the EV boom started.

The article states that the current average carbon footprint for a person in the US is over 16 tons. We can assume that this average not only includes travel but all other sources of carbon footprint in a person's life. Now, the goal apparently is to reduce the average to under 2 tons per person per year by 2050. The article further clarifies that 2 tons is approximately 2 roundtrip flights between NY and London (approx. 7900 flight miles roundtrip). That is approximately a little less than 16,000 miles per year. Contrast this to someone in Irvine making an annual trip to Asia (say LAX to Seoul). That would be approximately 10,000 miles which leaves 6000 miles for any other trips. There are many unanswered questions that this article raises. Would this scheme include work trips, will there be some type of cap or family maximum allowance, how about some type of annual decrease or will it always be 2 tons per year?

We see that google flights already shows you the carbon footprint for each flight. Some are closer to carbon neutral while others are quite high. So will the carbon footprint allowance be counted against you even if you fly on a flight considered almost carbon neutral? In other words, will the calculation be based solely on miles flown or based upon some type of measure as used for google flights. The article also states that such a limit on carbon footprint also applies to cruises. Other articles have suggested that some grocery goods already have carbon footprint information on their packages. Will the 2 tons annually be applied only to flights/cruises or anything else such as meats/grocery, etc.

On the bright side, if you travel extensively or plan to travel around the world after you retire, I am certain there will be some type of a carbon market where those in need will auction/sell off their carbon points and those who would like additional travel, etc., would be able to buy them. So expect to basically pay more to be able to do the things you are already doing now, and only if you can afford it. Everyone, start saving your Benjamins...
