NPR: Americans get sicker as omicron stalls everything from heart surgeries to cancer care

After every shift in his Seattle emergency department, Dr. Matt Beecroft comes away with some new story of how the omicron surge is making his patients sicker.

And not just from the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Instead, it's the delays and disruptions in medical care ? a consequence of overcrowded and short-staffed hospitals ? that are leading to, at times, life-threatening complications.

"It can be just heartbreaking," says Beecroft, who recalls one recent patient of his who had a heart attack. "She had been scheduled for a cardiac bypass," a procedure done to improve blood flow when there's an obstructed or partially blocked artery, "but that surgery had been canceled."

Beecroft, who's affiliated with the American College of Emergency Physicians, told two other doctors about the patient. That's when it became clear to him that this was far from an isolated event: "Between the three of us, we had seen four patients who had cardiac complications from not being able to get a cardiac surgery."

There's no way to quantify how many Americans are now suffering serious, if not irreversible, harm to their health because hospitals are buckling under the weight of the omicron variant of the coronavirus. But doctors say the consequences are far-reaching, given how many procedures have been postponed.

Omicron cases are now falling in the U.S. overall, but the pressure on hospitals will not evaporate so quickly, doctors say. Hospitalizations generally trail infections by a week or two, and critically ill patients can require lengthy hospital stays.

And while some hospitals have restarted elective surgeries, others are still too overwhelmed to do so.

"Most facilities have lists of hundreds of people who have had procedures or non-urgent care delayed," says Dr. Tammy Lundstrom, senior vice president and chief medical officer for Trinity Health, which has hospitals in 25 states.

Like so many doctors, Matt Beecroft sees patients stuck in a painful limbo ? unsure of when they'll be able to get care. One in particular stands out to him. He'd come into the emergency department for recurrent, worsening headaches related to a tumor that needed to be cut out but wasn't yet, because the hospital where the surgery was scheduled was too full.

My comment: Like I previously said due to covid hospitals are to full and had to cancel surgeries.

In my opinion and not the article, the health care system is turning like in third world countries. We hear and read in the news that the overwhelming majority of hospitalizations are due to non vaccinated people.

Over this...Mask mandates will fall very soon....

LA County?s COVID Hospitalizations Fall for Eighth Straight Day

he number of COVID-19-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals fell for the eighth consecutive day Tuesday, while health officials again reported continued drops in daily case numbers and the rate of people testing positive for the virus.

According to state figures, there were 3,710 COVID-positive patients in county hospitals as of Tuesday, down from 3,720 a day earlier. Of those patients, 719 were in intensive care, down from 749 a day earlier.

A little more than a week ago, there were more than 4,800 COVID-positive patients, but the number has been steadily declining. County officials have said that many COVID-positive patients entered a hospital for other reasons and only discovered they had the coronavirus after a mandated test.

Perfect logic: compare US hospitalization to Israel.
I think most people in America would go to the hospital in America.

If one digs deeper... this Israel 80% vaccinated is a retread of 2021 claims that were disproven. Need to define "fully vaccinated" too... I believe the number is like 6% who have received the 4th shot.

Additionally, there are other reasons that explain higher case counts which I mentioned before yet went unheard.

I would post links but they don't get read and even if they do get read, they don't get understood... so why bother?

Disinformation gonna disinformation.

Missed you bro - did you spend the entire day digging up this gem? Also found this information in the following (pay attention to the comments):

Actually, a very helpful post to let everyone know that misinformation can be spread utilizing faulty statistical analysis and a heads-up to be on the lookout for it and not fall for tabloid type headlines. TIers should applaud your efforts - I know I DO!!

You once again demonstrated your scientific expertise by not making the fatal error Dr. Yaakov Jerris did - drawing an erroneous conclusion! Looks like Jerris doesn't have a solid statistical foundation like you and me! Back in my Statistics 101 class I learned about Bayes? Theorem. I don't need to tell you how that applies in this situation, you definitely took higher level classes than me, but I'll post a link for others because I know you have a deep desire to help others out.

I know you also want TIers to look at both sides of an issue without bias - trademarks of your posts - and not practice the following:

Deep appreciation for your consideration of others

Meanwhile Americans that need elective surgery are being told to wait. Both side this! People are fed up with the hospital system getting filled that could of been avoided.

Do you remember the good old days? When you were sick and had insurance that you would be able to go to the hospital with no worries and fear.
Things have changed ladies and gentleman. (It really has) There are some articles that people are afraid to go the the ER due to fear of covid. Because they dont want to catch covid. (I dont blame them) I watch the news on utube that a kid caught covid when he went to the ER. (there is no way to prove it, but he didnt have covid before he went to the ER) The kid died due to complications of covid. Sad story.

Remember akula gonna be akula - like I'm bringing a machine gun to a squirt gun fight

Not a pleasant story and condolences to the family. Yes, there have been a handful of cases related to myocarditis and illustrated in these research reports:
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2788346https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7027e2.htm?s_cid=mm7027e2_w

I know in your risk/reward analysis of life activities you want absolute zero risk for vaccines, but not so much for anything else. Another word that starts with myo comes to mind - hint ends in pic. Both reports (and even the coroner in your article) explicitly stated that the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh its risk. So, thanks for sharing yet another article that reminds people that even though vaccine related deaths are indeed rare, you are still so much better off getting the vaccine.

Because covid deaths to the non-vaccinated are not rare - almost considered common place and perfectly acceptable to anti-vaxxers, which I consider extremely sad - DON'T YOU? And the number of young people dying is unquestionably exceptionally sad. Maybe during your free time today, you can dig up some numbers and reports about those young people also. I'm sure that will also bring tears to your eyes.

Hmmm....

'80% of serious COVID cases are fully vaccinated' says Ichilov hospital director
Vaccine has "no significance regarding severe illness," says Prof. Yaakov Jerris.

Are Israeli hospitals really overloaded with unvaccinated COVID patients? According to Prof. Yaakov Jerris, director of Ichilov Hospital?s coronavirus ward, the situation is completely opposite.

?Right now, most of our severe cases are vaccinated,? Jerris told Channel 13 News. ?They had at least three injections. Between seventy and eighty percent of the serious cases are vaccinated. So, the vaccine has no significance regarding severe illness, which is why just twenty to twenty-five percent of our patients are unvaccinated.?

Jerris also revealed some of the confusion in reporting cases. Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Sunday, he told ministers, ?Defining a serious patient is problematic. For example, a patient with a chronic lung disease always had a low level of oxygen, but now he has a positive coronavirus test result which technically makes him a ?serious coronavirus patient,? but that?s not accurate. The patient is only in a difficult condition because he has a serious underlying illness.?

That's why you should get injected every 3 months, as the protection wanes over time.

Always remember akula gonna be akula - looking out for mankind

Hmm...Is it possible that akula1488 didn't grasp the scientific statistics of Bayes' Theorem referenced in Reply #5788 just three days ago. I'll just chalk it up to a temporary brain freeze because his scientific expertise is well proven. An explanation would be beneficial to your flock - go ahead and try to.

A bold akula request - everyone gets injected every 3 months! No other scientist has proposed that yet. But how much human pain and suffering (including death) was saved during those 3 months (I know - not important) plus the omicron variant has demonstrated that the sweet natural immunity doesn't last much more than 3 months, particularly for those with a previous mild case. So your request is quite reasonable and so forward thinking.

Always remember akula gonna be akula - he provides excellent unintended info

Natural immunity has been recognized for quite some time (another Mandela Effect on your part?) it's just that there were questions about its strength, longevity, and how it would cope with a variant. The risk in obtaining it may have been an issue but then who cares if others had pain and suffering.

It's great that you have a complete understanding of analyzing statistical graphs including the underlining assumptions, definitions of variable, and the different types of correlations. Unfortunately, the Congressman doesn't but a link is provided to the source of his data and THAT person does have a great understanding of statistics and the proper conclusions derived from the data. I know you went through that link because of your thoroughness, and he makes many important points that you wanted to share for the benefit of the group. I'll help you out there:
https://twitter.com/ashishkjha/status/1487868684412628996is the source.

Some general conclusions: It is estimated that about 2/3 of the hospitalized unvaccinated group had a previous Covid infection which changes the graph dramatically - this minor tidbit is not reported too often. The natural immunity representation on the chart grossly underestimates the percentage of those with natural immunity who wind up infected again because those were already counted in total infections. The probability of someone with natural immunity getting reinfected is about 50 times higher than the vaccinated. Two other notes: those with previous infection with mild or no symptoms likely have NO immunity (estimated between 35-40%) and immunity seems to last 3 months, maybe 6 months for those with more serious infections - Just like the vaccine or slightly better. The natural immune are looking at a series of reinfections but that is also affecting the vaccinated but at a much lower rate.

I want to personally thank you for providing a link with more resources for those who think natural immunity is 100% sweet and forever. I know those who brag "I got Covid but felt nothing" didn't realize their immunity might not exist at all. Again, excellent job on your part.

I know you are often misunderstood, so here's a short article that might provide one explanation:

Sweet, Sweet natural, long term immunity...from the Lancet so it must be true...right?

Protective immunity after recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection

Several studies have found that people who recovered from COVID-19 and tested seropositive for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies have low rates of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection.

studies during the recent period of predominantly delta (B.1.617.2) variant transmission, found that the risk of repeat SARS-CoV-2 infection decreased by 80?5?100% among those who had had COVID-19 previously.

study conducted at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, USA, those who had not previously been infected had a COVID-19 incidence rate of 4?3 per 100 people, whereas those who had previously been infected had a COVID-19 incidence rate of 0 per 100 people.

Austria found that the frequency of hospitalisation due to a repeated infection was five per 14?840 (0?03%) people and the frequency of death due to a repeated infection was one per 14,840 (0?01%) people.4

Encouragingly, authors of a study conducted among recovered individuals who had experienced mild SARS-CoV-2 infection reported that mild infection induced a robust antigen-specific, long-lived humoral immune memory in humans

Some people who have recovered from COVID-19 might not benefit from COVID-19 vaccination.6,  19 In fact, one study found that previous COVID-19 was associated with increased adverse events following vaccination with the Comirnaty BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine (Pfizer?BioNTech).20 In addition, there are rare reports of serious adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination.21 In Switzerland, residents who can prove they have recovered from a SARS-CoV-2 infection through a positive PCR or other test in the past 12 months are considered equally protected as those who have been fully vaccinated.22
