CA DMV Registration Fees

Just got my vehicle registration renewal and for my EV car, it's $674. $4 more than last year!? The value of my car probably dropped 30% compared to last year. I thought the fee was based on the current value of the car (ie. fee drops every year). Is CA just playing games with the value of the car to generate extra revenue?

2020 was when it started? Based on a bill signed in 2017.

An EV worth $5,000 will pay a $25 fee. The amount climbs up to $175 per year for a plug-in electric vehicle worth $60,000 and higher.

But charging my EV is about 1/4 of filling up the tank with the current SCE pricing. And EV costed a lot more upfront than ICE in 2022 when I bought …felt like a lose-lose game to me.
