Vison is not enough. A multimodal approach makes more sense to me. There are many situations where vision is impaired by weather or obstructions. Radar and lidar can fill in the gaps. Add onboard AI and real time cloud data to complete the picture.

Exactly... which is why stuff that Elon says is often short-sighted.

Just because people use their eyes to drive does not mean that's good enough for an AI... AI has to make up for stuff like instinct and anticipation which requires more input than just visual. Computers are capable of more data so why not leverage that?

Tesla said it was a mistake relying on vision only. They plan to put HD radar on new cars starting early next year. I am picking my MYLR next week without USS. It’s not a big deal for me since i didnt use USS for parking anyways with my X5. But for buyers with FSD, they are getting screwed royally. I expect a class action lawsuit coming.

Already there...

Wish Kenkoko was still here.

AI has come quite a long way since our discussions here.

Except FSD.... still in the works, and other auto manufacturers have demonstrated why just "vision" is not enough for automated driving. Why? Vision is good enough for us and we don't have lidar... tell that to all the people who get into accidents every day. FSD is supposed to be better than people, not as good as.

People talk about an AI bubble. Maybe for companies who try to say they are AI-based but AI itself is going to continue to grow. And really, what makes a bubble? Stuff that blows up and pops... blows up again and is even more expensive... not sure that is a bubble, that's almost more like a zombie because it keeps coming back. Froyo was a bubble... pogs were a bubble... Pokemon is a zombie. AI will definitely be around forever then some.

The big leaps and bounds for AI are obviously arguing with morekaos... that's where it excels. :)

What guarantees continued investment in AI, above all else, is its potential for use in warfare. As long as we don't actually use it for that purpose, then society will benefit from the spillover, just like we do from all large government tech investment booms.
