Minimum Wage Increase Impact/Effect

IMO solar power technology, efficiency and design are going through rapid advancement and I would wait a bit.  For now you could invest in smaller systems to play with or even a portable solar oven -- fun toy for the summer.

In the long term, solar power will increase the wealth gap between the haves and have nots.  Just as home owners benefit from all kinds of tax deductions while renters have to deal with rising rents eating bigger slice of their paycheque, the move toward electric vehicles will benefit home owners with "roof space" in sunny regions who can install solar panels with government subsidies.  Apartment renters on the other hand will be stuck paying by the meter.

When buying SFR I look for single story homes on >5,000 sq ft lots.  I no longer invest in condos.  In future I think people will install extended patio roofs and mount additional solar panels on top.  Ideally the property should be located near some source of fresh water feature, but that may be difficult/limited in LA/OC region.

On-site water recycling system may also be in the future (except sewage, which will go to sewage processing plant).  The water from your sink/shower can be recycled and used to water home gardens via drip system, along with rainwater collection/catchment system.

Good post

Per the Costcos...  Some are unionized and some are not.  This could explain price differences

A little known fact is, the unionized employees have the great advertised benefits.  The other locations don't have as great benefits.

Source:  I have a friend whose wife worked at the Fountain Valley one while he worked at the Tustin one.  One was unionized and one wasn't.

New York City's Empty Storefronts And The $15 Minimum Wage

What happened? For starters, the state of New York embarked on an unprecedented experiment in raising the minimum wage. At the start of 2016, the city's tipped minimum wage increased by 50 percent, and the minimum wage for fast food workers jumped by nearly 17 percent to $10.50. At the start of 2017, the wage floor rose higher to $12 an hour, and the minimum wage for all businesses in the city rose by 22 percent to $11 an hour.

By the end of 2018, the minimum wage in New York City for anyone with 11 or more employees will be $15 an hour--a 67 percent increase over 2015.

The Times' editorial board was a strong supporter of these increases--both the fast-food specific increase and the statewide increase. At the time, the editorial writers dismissed "stingy" critics of the policy who ignore "the economic arguments in favor of $15." But the so-called "economic arguments" for $15 were always shaky, based on union talking points rather than rigorous empirical research. Not surprisingly, subsequent research from neutral third-parties has shown the folly of the Times' advocacy for $15.

I would love to see the impact of a handful of property developers owning all the prime retail real estate in these cities.

How much of a business's revenue goes to the workers who actually provide services in comparison to the billionaire landlord.

How much of NY has been regentrified?  I went there for the first time maybe 3 or 4 years ago. I used a booking sight and ended up in a chain hotel for 65% off. The three block radius where I stayed looked exactly like Orange Country in terms of eating and shopping options. It was horrible unless you think Starbucks, Wholefoods, TJ Maxx, Panera, CVS are wonderful destinations.

Oh my God!!...the irony here is so funny but She is blind to the facts.  This is the brain trust the Dems are offering up for the Mid terms?  You can have them.

Ocasio-Cortez Mourns Restaurant Driven Out Of Business By Minimum Wage Law She Backs

Economic Illiteracy: This week, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez "swung by" to say goodbye to a restaurant where she used to work. What she didn't say is that it is closing because the owners can't afford New York City's soon-to-be $15 minimum wage ? the very job-killing policy Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow Democrats want to impose nationwide.

"The restaurant I used to work at is closing its doors," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Monday. "I swung by today to say hi one last time, and kid around with friends like old times."

She was referring to the popular Coffee Shop in Union Square, which was frequented by A-list celebrities and featured on "Sex and the City." Despite its popularity, the Coffee Shop is going out of business. Why?

Co-owner Charles Milite told the New York Post that the main reason was "the minimum wage is going up and we have a huge number of employees."

Heh. Just went back and re-read this thread from the beginning.

I still think minimum wage is a bad idea. And we are already seeing the effects of raising the minimum wage.

If you really want to make Cali business friendly (@morekaos), lower the minimum wage or get rid of it.

And yes, I started using the kiosk at McDs (or the mobile app) so all I have to do is pick-up my healthy food.

IHO: good post

I agree: In general, let the market dictate what a person should make.

Yep... although some disagree what "market" means.

Also, I have a new tag for qwersuccess... #selfmademexican.

forget minimum wage, what about maximum wage? surprised the surge of socialists in this country haven't proposed legislation for that one yet!

It can't be the '90s because that's when Bill was president. It must have been awful because no one wanted to see his wife continue his legacy of free trade and cracking down on immigration and crime. Also Clinton raised the minimum wage for the first time in years (decades?) and everyone remembers how much the economy suffered as a result. Trump meant before the Civil Rights movement when everyone knew their place and everything was made in America.

Actually I was wrong. Bush raised the minimum wage in 1990 & 1991.

Ha ha, very well said.  You will get no logical response to this, but perhaps a gif or two :)
