Here's the thing, any transaction over $10K will be reported to the Treasury, if not the IRS. If the accepter is not obligated to do it, the bank is. In other words, if the bank cashed / honored a check of $10K or more, then the *bank* has to report that information. Anyone remember Eliot Spitzer?
BTW, who takes personal checks at closing? That I know of most (all?) escrows require cashier's checks or their equivalent.
