We had a truly fantastic Rose yesterday from the Cotes du Ventoux area of Provence. It's their 2008 Domaine de Fenouillet that hubby picked up at Total Wine for around $8.00. It was the most beautiful pale salmon color that it reminded me of a gemstone. Very dry without overpowering fruit and so nicely balanced. Roses are not my favorite, but I really really really liked this one.
 
I wish I had the time to do a proper trip report of Oregon and Washington, but I will give a few wine tips tonight.

First, Dobbes viognier is one of the best whites I have ever had, and it came highly recommended by many of the wineries in Dundee. I have had some awesome viogniers from Paso, but this was mind blowing. I'm not a big fan of desert wines, but I can appreciate a good desert wine. Their late harvest viognier is just amazing. It is the right balance of sweet, without that overbearing syrupy-ness.

Also, if you go to Seattle, a great day trip is out to Woodinville. Seriously, it is only like 20 minutes outside of downtown Seattle. Skip the big commercial vineyards (don't get me started about the old crab who didn't rinse my glass of the red wine for the desert wine, not even the peacocks could make up for that.), or at least save them for last, and head straight to J. Bookwalter. The subplot 23 just kicks ass. Then, go up to the warehouse area at the top left of the map. Yes, it is an industrial complex filled with 36 or so wineries (the map lists only the big names, like Big Sky and Alexandria, which I highly recommend). There are so many different wineries who have moved in there that you wouldn't get to taste because their winery is in BFE no where Washington, and you most likely will get to chat with the winemaker of the wines.

The food in Portland was some of the best food I have had anywhere. IMHO it beats SF, and is on par with NYC. Granted, I didn't go to five stars, but what would be considered four star in NYC would have some serious competition with what I would consider four stars in Portland.

Oh, and there are plenty of high rise towers to choose condos from too. LOL!
 
We really did try some outstanding whites on this trip. I discovered that Oregon Pinot Noir is just not for me. Not now, anyway. But I had some amazing rieslings, viongiers and pinot grises.

Oh, and at Lange in Dundee, Oregonof course I had to buy this one:

But the Pinot Gris Reserve was so amazing that my diabetic aunt smelled it, and then asked for a real taste. She bought a bottle and said "it was so good I'll just take insulin".
 
Graph and I were just talking about our trip last year to Mendocino wine country, and I thought I should recommend this one from Handley Cellars:

2007 Water Tower White, North Coast

I'm not sure I have ever enjoyed a $12 bottle of wine that much. We don't usually buy more than one of anything if we are travelling, but we came home with several bottles of this one.
