In the spirit of the holidays and hard economic times, I thought it would be nice if we could all share some of our favorite wines, particularly those in the under $15 range. I am particular to Chardonnay, but would love other suggestions too. Please list where to buy as well as price and I promise I'll try out most of the suggestions.

i love hogue chardonnay. find it at trader joes for about 7-8 bucks. has this almost tropical fruit essence to it. i imagine i smell guava. if you think you might like that sort of thing.

i bought 2 bottles of kim crawford 2007 unoaked chardonnay last wk from bevmo. $16.99

their 5 cent sale still going on...

both of these are light, crispier chardonnays

ACPME,

Yep I tried the Hogue Chardonnay and I really liked it. Very nice with a the light pasta and fish we were searving.

Otherwise, i've just purchased from a Winery I used to work at when I was a kid (La Vina Winery - New Mexico).

Hope things are going well for you.

Anything by Esterlina Vineyards. Outside of the price range, but my current favorite.

I picked up a few bottles of Hogue. Hubby and I love it, much smoother than other wines in that price range (it's only 5.99 at TJ's!). Thanks!

I recently picked up some Bogle Phantom at CostPlus ($16/bottle I think). Blend of mostly Zin. Pretty tasty and my wife (who has an affinity for Zins was enthusiastic). Had to breathe for 30 minutes before drinking.

My favorite low-priced wine from Trader Joes is a soft bubbly slightly sweet red wine called Reggiano Lambrusco. Since it is slightly sweet it doesn't go well with beef and heavier foods like other reds. It goes more with foods you'd have white wine with like chicken , turkey or lighter pasta dishes such as with a maranara sauce or is even good with appetizers or sandwiches. My wife especially likes this wine because she does not like the dry wines. It goes for about $5 if I remember right, and some TJs put it with their Italian red wines while others put it with their champagne/bubbly section. If you like a slightly bubbly white wine, then also try the Prosecco's in the same bubbly section. I haven't had them in awhile but they are around $6-15. Both the Lambrusco and the Prosecco are best chilled. If your preference is for dryer wines you won't like these. But if you are having holiday company of people who are not usual wine drinkers, then they will love it because non-wine drinkers usually like a slightly sweet wine over a really dry cab or chard.

You can get great French reds for $15 and under; TJ's is a great source for them. I'm reminded of a famous line: "when in doubt, Red Bordeaux".

Look for Hogue Late Harvest Riesling, if your wife prefers "not dry" whites. It's available here at Von's for about $7. And although the Edna Valley area is more known for Pinots, Edna Valley Winery makes some excellent Chards in the $10 - $12 range. You could just plan a weekend trip up to the Central Coast and hit a lot of exceptional local wineries!
