Vegetarian restaurant thread

Since we don't have a vegetarian restaurant thread, I thought I should start one. Too much meat over the weekend, need veggies, badly.

I like the Veggie Grill by UC Irvine, excellent sandwiches. They're opening a new location at Irvine Spectrum.

Tried "Wheel of Life" on Culver and was not overly impressed.

Gonna head out to either Au Lac in Fountain Valley or Thuyen Vien in Garden Grove tonight. Will review afterward.

I dined at Au Lac in Fountain Valley last night. Very interesting menu selection, mix of convention and eclectic. Definitely a "date" place and many of the customers appear to be regulars. They also have an interesting "elixir" bar serving non-alcoholic tonics.

We ordered fairly conventional Vietnamese vegetarian dishes last night (noodles, soup, vegetarian chicken w/lemon grass, veggie rolls). Next time I'll have to try their vegetarian paella and "chicken taco".

The menu(s) at this restaurant probably has some 150 selections between cooked vegan, raw veggie, and eclectic. The staff was very attentive and they have an interesting water container they use to refill your iced water. They also have a good desert menu but was too full to order any. Oh yes, the portions are not tiny.

There's an old school Chinese restaurant in the same parking lot called "Fu Wing Lo", a trendy Vietnamese restaurant called "Cloud 9", and another Vietnamese restaurant called "Dalat Bistro" that was closed yesterday. Funny thing is I've eaten at Fu Wing Lo for years with my friends in HB but never noticed Au Lac, hehehe.

I used to eat at Rutabegorz in Fullerton years ago. Loved their "Cockie Leeky" soup with bread on the side, and "The Heap" sandwich.

We go to this place in Rowland Heights EVERY single time my mom's friend visits from New York. I like it because it is clean, the staff is super friendly. They have honey walnut shrimp, kung pao chicken, sweet and sour fish, but of course they are all made with soybeans, bean curds, gluten??. You have the option of hot and sour soup and rice OR green mung bean congee?? with fried bread rolls. I recommend the latter one, yum.

It is quite a drive from Irvine, but if you are heading towards LA, it is worth a try. :)

Went to the Veggie Grill at The Spectrum tonight. Looks like a great location. I've been going to the one near UCI since they opened there and I'm glad to see they are doing well and expanding.

Me too! That was my first time at Veggie Grill today at the Spectrum, I tried the Santa Fe sandwich and it was really really good, it absolutely tasted like chicken. Will definitely come again!

I love fastfoods so my three southern favorites are Sonic, Zaxby's, and Chic-Fil-A. Nationwide my favorite is Arby's.

Given the name of the thread, I must assume you are recommending the above mentioned restaurants for their french fries and milkshakes.

I love Native foods, but why is it so expenesive? 11.50 for a bowl of brown rice, with curried sauce. 2 pieces of fake chicken, a half yam, couple carrots and some kale...

At least the one in Costa Mesa is a buck cheaper, but still, $10.50...

I still go to In-N-Out for the fries and shakes even though I gave up meat years ago. MMMMMMMMMMM... strawberry milkshake.

I like Native Foods as well but more some reason I either get a slight headache or get really sleepy after eating their food. I havn't had that problem with Veggie Grill though.

We go every once in a while. If you get a headache or sleepy it could be MSG. I just never feel full after eating there, plus the price can be a bit stiff.

Anyways good luck

I do seem to be sensitive to msg (i usually get a little headache after consuming food with msg). I think you are right, it may some type of preservative (natural or not).

thx for the info.

i went to 118 degrees before and was grossed out. for those unfamiliar, the name of the restaurant refers to the max temperature in which the food is cooked because at higher temperatures, food begins to lose some nutritional value. its part of the raw food movement, or as i call it, the nasty lukewarm food movement.

i ordered a sandwich. simple enough yeah? well you cant bake at 118 degrees so instead of bread, the sandwich was held together with some sort of cardboard-like thing made from nuts, grains, and dolphin poop.

WARNING: This restaurant may be difficult to find. It's inside a building with multiple shops next to the Little Saigon "Mall of Fortune", and the entrance is facing the side of the mall. Once you find the actual building (15131 Moran), find parking and just walk around the building until you find it.

What to eat here: Hot pot and soup noodles, like the bamboo shoot noodle in above photo. The hot pot is not cheap ($17 for small and $20 for large) but it comes with a lot of stuff, including plate of noodle. The small hot pot is enough for 1 and large for 2 people. There are many less expensive entree's (noodles) that are a good deal. Interesting that the vegetarian "duck bamboo shoot" noodle came with a salad on the side.

What NOT to order: Avoid ordering rice dishes here, like the broken rice dish. The rice is clumpy and you get a few slices of vegetarian meat substitute on the side. The fried rice on table next to ours looked OK though.

Near Rowland Heights area, there are also a few other vegetarian places worth a try.

1. Happy Veggie Garden

This restaurant is inside a ranch 99 plaza, and have almost identical menu as Happy Family Restaurant. I believe the owners are the same or related.

2. Heartland's Market & Kitchen

Has few menu choices, but very healthy. Also sells organic and vegetarian goodies.

3. Hsi Lai Temple

Not really a restaurant, but has lunch for $5. Very busy on the weekends due to tourists.

happy family was the old stalwart of the chinese vegetarian and buddhist community. there's also a location in monterrey park. one of the mgrs and the former chef had the owners and opened up happy veggie garden inside the ranch 99 plaza off the nogales exit of the 60.

like you said, almost identical menu so most of happy family's clientele has moved over to happy veggie. last i heard though, the chef was unhappy and is leaving to open his own place.
