I don't buy into the idea myself, but this post discussing the "subprime" meltdown as a nail in suburbia's coffin makes for interesting discussion.

The cost of the fuel required to get from suburbia to the job centers is another nail in the coffin. Commuting several hundred miles per week with gas at $3.50 stings a bit.
