Straw poll on gay marriage

With 78% reporting...



Yes: 52.0%



NO: 48.0%



And, only about half in for LA (that alone could push it over the edge), SC, Ventura, Monterey, SD counties reporting, OC lower than I thought, and how the lead continues to shrink overall and the margin too, I still have hope for this.



I would stay up and watch this with you Troop, as I have as much passion as a straight person could have for this, but I need to wake up in less than 6 hours. I can hope that when I wake up things will be different.



I have a feeling there will be lawsuits to come of this if it passes. Maybe some of the anti-wealth spreading supporters would be willing to spread their wealth by doing pro-bono work to have a prop on the ballot that clearly states what it means. Because I can't believe California, the leader in civil rights like equality for all races and women's right to vote, would vote Yes on this. Maybe I am wrong, but for tolerance sake, I hope I am not.
 
It's over. Prop 8 has passed. :down:



With 91% of the vote in it stands at 52% for the ban on gay marriage. There is no way to make up the gap at this point.



What strikes me as ironic, is that Californians trust me to carry a gun, to enforce their laws and uphold the Constitution...but not to marry. I can take a bullet for you, but I can't take a vow.



It also makes me very sad to see that my fellow Californians gave more rights to chickens yesterday, than to me.



I don't want to say much else at this time, except to thank the over 4.6 million people who voted with me, and for me.



I'm very grateful for that.
 
I am very disappointed. But this was just one battle.



I have heard that lawsuits have already been filed against those churches and religious groups to take away their tax status because of their involvement in our political process. We need to have separation of church/state.



There is no way that we should give up on this. It took a long time for other civil rights battles to be won and marriage rights will prevail. I am very sorry about the results Trooper, but I'll be there in the next battle with you. Count me in.
 
Im so happy that Obama won! Finally the our country woke up and saw that it can't continue like before! Just an amazing victory for Obama!!!
 
I'm very happy that Obama has won, but so very disappointed in California voters that Prop. 8 didn't pass. Like Trooper wrote, it appears that chickens have more rights than gays and lesbians. It makes me feel very discouraged that, on the very day a Black man won the Presidency, another segment of our population still has to fight for rights. It just doesn't make sense to me.
 
I will repeat the sentiment of Anon. . .As I was celebrating the historic victory of Barack Obama and feeling immense pride of the hurdles that our country has overcome, I was deeply saddened by the sheer intolerance and bigotry shown by the voters in Florida, Arizona, and especially in California. The "Golden State" has turned its back on a large segment of its population and told them that they are not equal, that they are different, and that somehow it is okay to have language of exclusion in the state constitution. Can one imagine if the American changed the Constitution after Brown v. Board of Education to condone "separate but equal" or changed the Constitution after Loving to prevent mix-race marriages? It is a sad day indeed.



I hope that this is just a setback and that the people of California will wake up this morning realizing their mistakes and move toward the light.

Remember that friend I told you about, my co-worker at LAPD? The Mormon one. Well, I saw on his facebook page today that he was calling Obama Korihor....which I had to Google and found out it means the Anti-Christ. So I wrote him a short note and advised him that due to his church's involvement in Prop 8's passage, and his comments... I could no longer justify being his friend. He wrote back immediately, saying "I thought we agree to disagree"....but I told him it's just too raw for me. That I no longer could dismiss what he stood for.



There will be rioting tonight for sure. And a moratorium on interior decorating. You heard it here first.
 
I'm so disappointed. Looking at the juxtaposition between Obama's victory and Prop 8's defeat, all I could say (since last night) was WTFFFFF.

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God?s Law. I have learned a great deal from your bible, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.



I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them.



1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors.

They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?



2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair

price for her?



3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19-24. The problem is,

how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.



4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend

of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can?t I own Canadians?



5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?



6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don.t agree. Can you settle this?



7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?



8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.

19:27. How should they die?



9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?



10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn.t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)



I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God?s word is eternal and unchanging.
 
This Fucking decision is bringing me right back to when I was 17 yrs old, and my mother told me I was sick. As in sick ....like scary sick....my own mother. You fucking mormons.

I want to tell them how much of a sick cult I think their religion is.
 
Troop, once again, I'm sorry that we couldn't have it all. I know that the bible slinger's petitioned to have this placed on the ballot but is there any way that this decision could be appealed? Sorry for my ignorance on this matter. I ask because the Supreme Court did deem gay marriages legal, right? So that has to stand for something.



But to re-enforce what you said, fuck the mormon's.
 
I believe the only recourse now, is the the United States Supreme Court.

I am so sorry. Frankly, I can't believe this passed. Thinking of you, I too have tears in my eyes. However, I'm not convinced that it's over. I really don't believe that we can take away the rights of a segment of the population. Please don't get too down as the fight is really not over.

I am so disappointed in the state I call home. Everyone I talked to was voting No on 8.

I thought california was a liberal state?



The only thing I am hoping for is the absentee ballots.

And there would be many of the reasons why I left the church. The picking and choosing of which parts of the Bible would be followed and/or used to incite hate, and which parts were explained away to me as "oh, well, that's just a part of the old Hebrew culture. We don't have to follow that one." In fact, I would challenge all Christians to go study up on what God thinks about your bank account, and what the relationship between husbands and wives is supposed to be according to the Bible.



Troop, I am so very, very disappointed. I was so proud to be an American last night, and when I saw the results on 8 I was ashamed to be Californian.

The outcome of prop. 8 is a disappointment, but it is only one battle of many. The bigots will not win the war.
