Scientists Ask Americans to Help Change Racist Insect Names

Scientists are asking for help to rename racist insects, as they seek to remove terms which are "inappropriate or offensive."

The Entomological Society of America (ESA) announced in June the common names for the moth Lymantria dispar and the ant Aphaenogaster araneoides, "Gypsy moth" and "Gypsy ant," had been removed from their Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms List.

The ESA confirmed the names had been scrapped as they contained an "ethnic slur," and were "identified as containing a derogatory term for the Romani people."

The move comes as the ESA spearheaded the Better Common Names Project, which will review and replace common insect names which don't meet their standards, confirming it will change only the most "problematic names."

I wonder how much was spent to move a "Racially offensive" ROCK!!!  Stupid is as stupid does.

No longer a memorial, rock removed from campus

The University of Wisconsin?Madison moved the former Chamberlin Rock, an object that had become a painful symbol of racism to generations of students, to a site off the main campus on August 6.

The rock had sat at the crest of Observatory Hill since 1925. That same year, it was referred to in a newspaper headline by a deeply offensive nickname that included a racial slur. The derogatory nickname was commonly used at the time to refer to any large, dark rock.
Last November, students testified at a meeting of the Campus Planning Committee that the continued presence of the rock was a daily reminder of the injustices, past and present, that students of color face on campus.

Pluck of the Irish: Notre Dame bites back after its leprechaun mascot is deemed one of the most 'offensive' in college sports

A survey by Quality Logo Products listed Notre Dame?s Fighting Irish leprechaun as the fourth-most offensive college football team mascot in the nation

Too White: Plaster Is Racist Now, Too

It will erect signs to explain the whiteness of the plaster casts.  Faculty will be encouraged to include content warnings in course materials, lectures and readings.  Tutors will receive training on how to discuss sensitive issues, even if they are uncomfortable.  The present proposal is that all members of the classics faculty should be given implicit bias training every three years, and their teaching should be monitored.  Is Cambridge becoming biblical?  "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow?"

What a woke joke...

Squaw Valley, home of 1960 Winter Olympics, changes its 'racist and sexist' name - which has been used to describe Native American women since Louis and Clark in 1800s
The Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Ski Resort in Northern California dropped the 'racist' and 'sexist' term squaw and renamed the resort
It is now called the Palisades Tahoe
It opened in 1949 and hosted the 1960 Olympics
Squaw is considered a 'racist' and 'sexist' term that referred to a Native American who provided sexual favors to white men
The name changes comes at a time when the United States is undergoing what some refer to as 'cancel culture'
The country's racial reckoning has included Native America the removal of what some consider to be offensive Native American terms
Over the last year, Washington D.C. dropped the word 'Redskins' from its football's team and the Cleveland baseball team dropping the word 'Indians

Trees (or lack there of) are now Racist...We have a tree race Gap!!! ;D ;D >:D

To understand what type of neighborhood is associated with more or less tree cover, we compared the tree canopy numbers with the median household income of each San Francisco census tract ? a geographic area with about 1,200 to 8,000 residents. Overall, we found that wealthier census tracts tend to have more tree cover than lower-income tracts. On average, a census tract with a median household income of over $150,000 has 15 percent of its area covered by trees, compared to just 7 percent in a census tract with a median income of $80,000 or less.

This isn?t just an issue in San Francisco. Tree inequity exists in many U.S. cities. According to a study published in April of this year, low-income census blocks ? small geographic areas equivalent to city blocks ? have 15% less tree cover than high-income census blocks. A primary reason for this inequality is historical redlining and ongoing segregation within cities. A recent study showed a link between residential housing segregation from the 1930s and the size of tree canopies in several metropolitan areas. Researchers found that areas formerly graded A in neighborhood appraisal maps ? the nicest neighborhoods generally inhabited by white residents ? had nearly twice as much tree canopy as areas formerly graded D ? areas with poor housing inhabited by racial minorities. Even today, cities are segregated by income, with wealthy families having the resources to move to areas within the city with more trees, while lower incomes families are unable to make similar moves.

Rolling Stones RETIRE 'Brown Sugar' after criticism over slavery lyrics: Keith Richards says 50-year-old song is about 'horrors' of the trade but he's tired of fighting with people 'trying to bury it' and band will not play it anymore

The British band are four gigs in to a 13-date U.S. tour, which begun in Sept 26
The rockers are yet to play Brown Sugar - their second-most played song
They last performed it live in August 2019 and have now retired the song for now
Brown Sugar's lyrics tell of slavery, rape, racism and sexual violence
Mick Jagger said the 1969 song has 'all the nasty subjects in one go'
The song was released in 1971 and is one of their most popular
He said in 1995 that there is no way he would have written the song now
Jagger said the band decided to give the song a break, potentially returning to it

They want to kill comedy...we shouldn't let them...

?Airplane!? creator slams joy-killing threat: ?Twitter 9 percent?

Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the release of ?Airplane!,? the comedy I wrote and directed with my brother Jerry and our friend Jim Abrahams. Just before the world shut down, Paramount held a screening at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, followed by a Q&A in which an audience member asked a question we never used to receive: ?Could you make ?Airplane!? today??

My response: ?Of course, we could. Just without the jokes.?

Although people tell me that they love ?Airplane!? and it seems to be included on just about every Top Five movie-comedy list, there was talk at Paramount of withholding the rerelease over feared backlash for scenes that today would be deemed ?insensitive.?

I?m referring to scenes like the one in which two black characters speak entirely in a jive dialect so unintelligible that it has to be subtitled. I?ve lost count of the number of people who have said to me, ?You couldn?t do that scene today.?

'I have trouble envisioning the future beyond a year'

(CNN)With the COP26 climate summit coming up in Glasgow, it is time for more world leaders to heed the existential concerns young people feel and the distrust of governments they harbor by taking bold action. If they don't, they must be ready to face the steadily worsening mental health of their own youth.

It's no secret that young people everywhere are worried sick about the climate crisis. Their heavily reported eco- or climate anxiety (now becoming familiar terms to many), have awoken adults to the mental health burden that a warming world puts on our children and youth. Recent research my colleagues and I conducted showed for the first time that this psychological distress is linked to feelings of government betrayal and being lied to by leaders who are failing to take adequate climate action -- many while pretending to do otherwise.
Climate anxiety is not a mental health disorder, nor is it a clinical diagnosis. Rather, it is a normal and natural response to a very real civilizational crisis that is unfolding. It marks one's wakefulness to reality, can spur people to action, and is thereby an adaptive response. However, if not supported, it can cause real suffering, and become overwhelming and debilitating.

Vice President Vapid's alma mater is virtue signaling and changing its name to....Vapid School of Law

Hastings Law to Change Name Linked to Native Massacres
A Times article helped galvanize a push to rename the school, whose founder masterminded the slaughter of Yuki men, women and children.

As a law student in 1950s San Francisco, Willie Brown paid little heed to the name of the school he was attending: the Hastings College of the Law, named after the state?s first chief justice, whose dark past was not widely known.

?People did not pay attention to anything named 100 years ago or 150 years ago,? Brown, the former San Francisco mayor and Democratic power broker, told me when I called him Tuesday evening. ?None of us did. And particularly me.?

Democrat strategist James Carville: What went wrong in Virginia election was 'stupid wokeness'

When asked how Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe lost to Republican Glenn Youngkin in a state that President Biden won by 10 points a year earlier, Carville replied that it was nothing short of "stupid wokeness" and the progressive agenda.
