What's the best way to learn how to play poker? SoCal here wants to learn. Assume I know nothing.

Yes, thank you. I've been reading a lot online - that site and others. It seems like the more you learn, the more there is to know. I should ask Martin the Card King where the best place is to try a fixed limit Texas Hold 'Em. Martin, when are you going to hold a poker strategy boot camp at your new house? You can be the dealer.

I've got a nice wood table, plus monogrammed clay chips (Christmas gift from Soylent Red) I can donate to the cause should someone host a beginners table game. Most Irvinites might not want to travel to the RSM boonies to play a friendly game, but if there's enough interest I could host.

By the way, is it "Irv-eenos", "Irvine-ites", or "Irvin-e-ans"? What is the proper way to describe people who live in Irvine?

I thought we were just referred as "Chindians" no?

It's "Unicornians".

Those online poker sites that used to be gambling are free "educational" sites now.

It's a way for you to play and get a taste for the game while remaining anonymous.

I think PokerStars.com is one of the more "reputable" ones.

You can read the books, play home games, play for free online, but you have to play for real money against strangers to understand. Learning is not free, there's a tuition. It took me a good 2 years at the casino to start winning consistently and where I finally understood how to play my position, make the right reads, understand betting strategy to maximize pots or get people to lay down, etc. it was a while before I lost that insecurity of possibly being the fish.

I gave myself a month gap when I was switching jobs and played at commerce everyday. Was up 5 figures...thought to myself maybe I don't need to start that new job. thought i'd take a chance and bought in 5k to the 600 no limit game (first time ever playing that table), waited for the perfect hand to double up, but got a really bad beat and lost. was so upset, cashed in the rest and lost it all. went to work a week later.

I don't think SoCal wants to become the next Chris Moneymaker... but playing in-person with strangers is definitely an experience.

Too bad No_Vas isn't around (although I think you have a way to contact him)... I think he called Commerce his "night job".

Talk Irvine World Series of Poker!!!!

I wish Indie can host it at his new place, I wanna lose my "paltry" ::) money to him as I gaze at the Avalon bound ferries, and fishing boats from his backyard..

Try to play poker online with fun money to learn the game.  Then if you want live action you can go over to Hawaiian Gardens Casino and play the $.50/$1 limit table.

you can also download free casino apps on your ipad or iphone and practice with other people using fake chips.

Okay, thanks. I found a fun online version to cut my teeth. I'm a bit surprised by the fast-paced nature of it. (It's Texas Hold 'Em on Zynga.) I think it's primarily due to the way the software is set up. Well, that, and you can't sit there and read people as you would in person. I'd prefer a little slower-paced game but might have to play in person to get that. Also, I prefer strategy games over chance.

Hmm... I didn't realize there was a Zynga mobile app for HoldEm... I think I'll start playing again... add it to my Scrabble addiction.

Texas Hold'em is the most popular of the poker games.  Play Limit instead of No-Limit to get comfortable with the game.  When you go play in real life you'll find the game very social yet analytical.

I want to be the next Vanessa Rousso.

Yeah, IHO, Zynga has the mobile app. I haven't tried it on mobile yet, though. I was playing it through Facebook where you can meet up at a virtual table with your virtual friends.

If anyone wants to play poker with SoCal, you can find me here: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1349211110&ref=tn_tnmn

Trace and CZ are already my FB friends. If either of you want to play tomorrow mid-day, let me know.
