Looking for anyone who may have witnessed an accident around 10 am on Sunday October 7 near the intersection of Barranca Pkwy and Culver Dr.

My wife in the blue Toyota Sienna van was traveling westbound on Barranca and was about to turn right in to Culver Dr.  She stopped in the right turn lane.  There was a black Toyota Rav4 in front of her.  My wife stopped about 30 feet behind the Rav4 and waited for it to turn and clear the intersection.  Suddenly,  the Rav4 came in reverse and ran in to the front of my wife's van, damaging the hood and the bumper.

The driver of Rav4 came out and explained that her rear wheel became stuck on the curve.  She was an inexperienced driver.  She admitted the accident was her fault and gave all her insurance and driver license information.  She did not ask for any of my wife's  information.  My 7 year old son and family friend's 9 year old boy were in the van and witnessed the Rav4 backing in to my wife's van.

We should have waited for the police and file an accident report, but I had left my other son playing baseball at Harvard Park and had to go back soon.  We thought her insurance would take care of it.

Now, the driver of Rav4 is claiming we rear ended her and that we were at fault.

We are looking for anyone who may have witnessed this accident to come forward and tell the truth.

If you, or someone you know, witnessed this accident, please contact me via email at  kimkeu74@yahoo.com

Thank you very much.

I'm not a witness, but I hope you find one.  That's a punk ass move by the other driver and felony insurance fraud.  Try posting on Craigslist also, they get more hits than talkirvine.  Good luck.

So what's the right thing to do here?  Wait for the police?  She'll probably change her story when the traffic cop arrives.

@Kim, did ur wife notice the Rav4 at any time prior to pulling up behind it?  Did they scope her out first?  I'm gonna tell my wife to record any incidents on her phone if something like this happens.

The person will be less likely to lie to the po-po.

What sticks out me me here is 30 feet is a large distance so that might be a mistake/exaggeration by the OP or his wife...  I don't know of anyone stops that long before a car, even 15 feet is a large gap. If you tell this story to your insurance and the person had to reverse 30 feet to get their rear wheel off the curb... it could bring up some questions. Considering the average car length is 16 feet or so... to claim you were 2 car lengths away and they reversed that entire distance to hit you... well... I would just say you were 10 or 15 feet behind them (which is more realistic).

Sorry Kim, This was a scam and you were the victim. The evidence clearly indicates you were at fault.
Didn't think of this, but I've heard of setups like this scenario.  The OP sounded like it was just a young kid who changed their story cuz was afraid to get in trouble, but the scam angle sounds plausible.  That freakin sucks if it was a setup the whole time.  Anyway, @Kim, thanks for posting your story, I'll be sure to call the police if this ever happens to me.

Second this.  I have one installed in my car for situations like this.

without police report and independent witness, the best case scenario is that your insurance adjuster is on your side and gets you 50/50 at fault.
I feel sorry for you and good luck.

Kim - if you have the insurance info and home address, it sounds like you need to pay a visit to this persons home and set the record straight and let them know about the consequences and repurcussions of messing with you and your family.

Hey do you have a link to the model you picked up or recommendations? I do alot of driving and have been wanting to record a few of them of the drives I take. How is the video quality on them?

Also I did think the 30 feet distance was kinda strange, unless the driver saw the other driver had reverse lights on already and was making room. I will give 30 feet when I see someone in the crosswalk and pedestrians are crossing and the car in front of me needs to backup.

I was almost hit by a setup when I lived in LA, was going to make a left turn but a car that was parked against the curb on the other side of the street just gunned it, you could totally tell they were just waiting for a mark to show up. Luckily I turned back the other way at the last second and missed it.

I have a BlackVue DR400G-HD.  Search those words on YouTube and you'll get plenty of hits.  I ran my first one with parking mode on, where the camera will stay on for a period of time after you shut off the engine.  Apparently, on hot days, this will burn out the sensor, and my videos became very blurry from the damaged sensor.  I now run it with parking mode turned off, so hopefully this one will last me more than a year.
