Irvine police responded around 7 a.m. after someone called to report an injured man on the San Diego Creek Trail, behind the Los Olivos Apartment Homes community at 350 Gitano.

When officers and Orange County Fire Authority arrived, they found the man had died.

His identity was not immediately known, and police suspect he may have been killed.

No further details were immediately released.

Please confirm if there is another isolated incident of another dead body near Barranca where I heard from my source helicopters are hovering all over the crime scene. I am in NYC and too far away to verify.

IRVINE - Police are investigating as a homicide the death of a man found Tuesday morning on a popular bike path behind an upscale apartment complex in a city considered among the nation?s safest.

Late Tuesday afternoon police identified the man via Twitter as 51-year-old Irvine resident Sidney Siemensma.

Irvine police responded around 7 a.m. after someone called to report an injured man on the San Diego Creek Trail behind Los Olivos Apartment Homes, according to the Irvine Police Department. The community is located at 350 Gitano, north of Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre and south of I-405.

When officers and Orange County Fire Authority personnel arrived, they found a body with multiple injuries.

Police were attempting to determine the ?nature and cause? of those injuries to deduce the cause of death, said Farrah Emami, public information officer for the Irvine Police Department.

A bicycle was found near the man?s body, and police are investigating whether it?s related to the incident, Emami said.

It appears that the homicide is an isolated incident, she added.

The body was visible to drivers on I-405 Tuesday morning, so he was covered with a tent until coroner officials arrived around 10:15 a.m.

Josie Santos, 20, of Santa Ana said she saw the body as she was driving south on I-405 at around 7:45 a.m. with two co-workers to their jobs at an Irvine loan company

As their car slowed down to switch lanes and exit the freeway onto Irvine Center Drive, Santos glanced over and spotted an older white male on the trail wearing what appeared to be a sweater, shorts and running shoes, she said.

?There was blood all over his clothing,? she said, adding that about a half-dozen police officers stood around the man.

Yvette Middleton, a nanny for a family who lives in Los Olivos, said she was preparing to take the 10-month-old boy she babysits out for a stroll on the trail when she spotted police and turned back.

?It?s crazy,? she said while pushing a stroller. ?I walk here every day for an hour.?

Valerie Harlow, a Los Olivos resident, said the police activity interrupted her morning walk on the trail.

?I?m not going down there because it?s roped off,? she said. ?They (police) had to turn bikers away.?

The FBI this past fall said Irvine had recorded its lowest-ever per capita rate of violent crime and property crime in 2014.

That year, according to the same federal data, Irvine had the nation's lowest per capita violent crime rate among cities with a population of at least 100,000 for the 11th year running. The city had two homicides in 2015, according to police.

Hmmm... sounds drug-related.

Irvine police say possible suspect in Los Olivos homicide in custody on unrelated charges

Jan. 26, 2016 Updated 2:17 p.m.

IRVINE ? A person in police custody Tuesday has been identified as a possible suspect in the death of an Irvine stay-at-home dad who was killed last week near the Los Olivos neighborhood.

Irvine police released a short online video Tuesday morning showing some details about Sidney Siemensma?s Jan. 19 homicide.

?He knew his assailant, and this was not a random attack on a stranger,? police Lt. Bill Whalen said in the video.

?Following the homicide, a person-of-interest was contacted. That person was arrested by Irvine police for unrelated charges and remains in jail.?

Police refused to identity the person or say what crimes he or she was arrested on suspicion of committing, and officials will not do so during the homicide investigation, said Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the Irvine Police Department.

The news of the person taken into custody didn?t give Cindy Siemensma, the victim?s wife, any more clues on Tuesday morning.

?It could have been anyone,? she said in a phone conversation. ?He rode with people sometimes but also with people he didn?t know.?

She said her husband would have talked to anyone who approached him because he was friendly to everyone.

?If someone was out there and talked to him, he would have talked to them, too,? she said.

The investigation spurred questions about the safety of the area. Police maintain the community near the crime scene is not in danger.

?We know that members of our community want information about this case; as we continue to investigate there are some details we won?t be able to share. The reason is to make sure that any statements from witnesses or other people with information in this case are pure and not tainted by what they read on social media or see in the news,? Whalen said on the video.

Siemensma was found around 7 a.m. Jan. 19 dead on the San Diego Creek Trail behind the Los Olivos apartment community. His body was seen by drivers on I-405 near the Irvine Center Drive exit before police covered him.

Since her husband?s passing, Siemensma and her children have created a memorial with flowers and photos at the scene.

?My children miss him,? she said. ?They had their dad every day of their lives.?

Siemensma hopes anyone with information about the crime will go to the police to help with the investigation.

The development that a person is in police custody was little consolation to the grieving wife.

?I will feel better when the person is convicted and put away, and they can?t hurt or kill anyone else,? she said. ?No family should have to go through this.?

a stay-at-home dad in irvine?  That's the BEST job in the world.  Wife collects the 6-figures while he hops on a bike at 6AM and bikes for fun.

Wife told me no.  I can't be a stay at home dad :(  Oh well

Stay-at-home dad doesn't necessarily mean he is spooning off his wife.  Many people telecommute for work.  Companies go through this weird repeating cycle where they encourage/allow telecommuting, then after a few years they stop the telecommuting due to abuse, and after few more years they forget all about it and repeat the same cycle.

I really don't trust telecommuters.

They tell me how much harder it is than working in an office and that they have to work much longer hours etc etc etc. So then when I ask them if it's so bad, why not just go back to working 8-hour days in the office?

You can hear the pins dropping.

I'm a part-time telecommuter and I can vouch that it's MUCH easier working from home, especially if your office is more than 30 mins away.

I know it is.

I used to be a contractor so the conveniences of being at home and being able to do "other" things than just work is way easier than having to drive to the office and be there for 8 hours a day.

I just don't like it when they try to make it seem like they are doing us a favor or that their work life is way more difficult.

Yikes.  When I heard this man was stabbed by a transient you think he'll look like some old wild eyed crazy guy.

The guy in this picture doesn't appear homeless at all, in fact he'd probably clean up quite well.  Looks like a guy I spoke to at a car dealership the other day, or the guy I was behind in line at Ralph's tonight.

They knew each other

Authorities allege Monson was on the San Diego Creek bicycle trail in Irvine the morning of Jan. 19 when he got in an argument with Sidney Siemensma, 51. The two were acquaintances, according to the Orange County district attorney's office.

During the argument, Siemensma was stabbed multiple times, authorities said.
