Actually, while the viet population has expanded from Westminster to include parts of GG and Santa Ana, GG was and continues to be predominately Korean.

Irvine, while it does have many people of Chinese ancestry, is actually in my experience a big mix of successful people from many ethnic groups including Koreans, Viet, Hispanic, Persian, etc. who leave their ethnic enclaves "for the good life"

here is the breakdown from the census:

Races in Irvine:

* White Non-Hispanic (57.0%)

* Chinese (10.5%)

* Hispanic (7.4%)

* Korean (5.3%)

* Two or more races (4.8%)

* Japanese (3.6%)

* Asian Indian (3.1%)

* Vietnamese (3.1%)

* Other race (2.5%)

* Filipino (2.4%)

* Other Asian (1.9%)

* Black (1.4%)

* American Indian (0.6%)

I'm going to guess that the Persian/Middle-Eastern population must roll up into that 57% White Non-Hispanic category. As a blond hair blue eyed cracker, I can certainly tell you that it does not seem that 57% of the folks I encounter on a daily basis resemble me. Don't get me wrong --- the diversity is one of my favorite things about Irvine, and I enjoy not seeing myself coming and going on every corner. Makes me feel a little more *special*.

Variety is the spice of life.
 
For this case, you'd feel special in Irvine, but I dont think so if you were in South Central sticking out.

Asian 52%

White 36%

Hispanic/Latino 5%

American Indian 1%

given our tax payer dollars already went into the trouble of counting ALL people just 2 yrs ago, why dont we just go with eva's numbers?
 
Thanks bk for yet another rant with generalizations and stereotyping. And for anyone who thinks that its just his "observations", well then you try inserting the word "white" instead of Asian and see if you still feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
 
i don't get it... his last big "rant" was why irvine is not comparable to monterrey park. his reasons are:

- surrounding communities too expensive for cheap immigrant labor

- public transportation lacking (which cheap immigrant labor relies on)

- zoning and TIC control make it difficult for mom&popbusinesses that are the lifeblood of immigrant communities to thrive

those have nothing to do with generalizations and stereotypes, and everything to do with demographics and ordinances.
 
I thought this entire shopping center was going to have Asian stuff, but I read that it will have a Greek Islands restaurant. I wonder how it will do in a predominantly Asian shopping center.

Thanks Acpme for summarizing my key points why Irvine will never becomes Monterey Park. I am not trying to degrade Asians or Chinese. I respect their culture and spent many years trying to understand it. The fact that Asians are willing to uproot themselves from their homeland and leaving everything behind and take the unknown journey to America an unfamiliar place in which they have to learn a new language and assimilate to a new culture. Very few Americans would ever do that but for the Asians it is a dream of a lifetime.

Asians are like cockroaches. They will survive and adapt to any type of living conditions and environment. They will start in America in the ghettos but keeping their dream well alive for a future in Shady or Crystal Cove. Society in the past discriminated against the Asians by locking them up in camps and burning down their towns. Only the worse jobs were given to the Asians with over worked hours and underpaid salaries. The Asians survived and working their way slowly in gaining respect from society as smart and respected citizens.

Just like the Cockroaches Asians could never be eradicated so it is better for society to learn about them. Asians represent the largest consumer shares in expensive purchases such as homes and cars.

I suspect you're also Asian, as am I. Sometimes when people express things about a particular asian culture, it can hit home as a stereotype, racist, or derogatory perception our culture/ethnicity. It's normal to feel a bit hurt, but at the same time, we have to look at our cultures and see some truth in some of this. We may not fit the "generalizations" but I sure know many in my circles that do fit those generalizations and stereotypes. I don't really care if I'm 'thrown' into those stereotypes because frankly, I have at times have "stereotyped" people into a category, when I probably should not have. I bet some of us on this blog have some stereotype of people who have HELOC'd themselves out of their homes without know the whole story. What would you do if your child was sick and you need $150,000 for organ transplant or some other life saving medical procedure. I'd HELOC myself out of my home in heartbeat to save my girls.

If this were a typical forum, a lot of these threads would be locked and mud would be thrown all over the place. BK's postings are from his / her studies of the asian culture, buying habits and architecture. While we may not all fit BK's generalizations, his knowledge and perceptions uncannily match my own perceptions and view of various asian cultures. Sometimes the postings hit home a bit hard for me too, but then I realize that's because his perceptions are my reality.

What? Uh, unless you are refering to native americans, *all* americans did this at one time or another during their lineage.

Thanks, the American ancestors started their journeys several hundred years before the Asians. You are correct!

I should reword this. "Americans living in the land of freedom and opportinities are never faced with the decision to leave their country behind to seek a better life else where".

Our Native Indians could have been migrated from Asia via the northern part of Russia once was connected to Alaska by land mass. The Eskimos, Mayans, Aztec and Native Indians have similar facial features like Asians. Their herbol and medicine remedies are strikingly similar to Asian medicine. Hispanic has some Asian features as well.
