I'm looking into purchasing my first gun.  This will be for home defense only, I know we're in Irvine but I want to be ready if something happens.  Any recomendations?  Big 5 has shotguns on sale every week, I'm 6'1 and my wife is 5'0.  I want something we can both shoot, so maybe a short barrel shotgun.  Anyone recommend a place to buy besides Big 5?  Where's a good place to practice?

I would recommend in looking for an easier to use hand gun that has small kick-back.  You can go out to a firing range and test out several guns before you decide to purchase one.  To be honest, going to the firing range can be very fun.

Quite honestly, in Irvine (and for many cities in the OC), if you were in a situation where you required a gun... it would either have to be zombies or some end of world event.

Unless you are properly trained in gun safety and usage, it could cause more harm then good... especially with kids in the home.

And to store one safely (trigger guard, gun safe, ammunition in separate safe) kind of deters being able to access it quickly enough to use for something like a home invasion.

But... that's just my opinion.

The Gun Store in vegas. We went there for as part of an outing of a bachelor party. For about $120 you get to shoot three guns of your choice. That was my first time shooting an automatic maching gun and it was an awesome feeling. If you never shot an automatic weapon that is something you definitely gotta try. Automatics are illegal in california i believe so you would have to shoot in Nevada.

From what I've read, a shotgun is better choice for home defense than a handgun. Easier to aim, more bang for your buck, and it can serve dual purpose (i.e. hunting & home defense). That being said I don't know of any shotgun ranges nearby Irvine. Most in OC are indoor ranges for handgun or .22 rifle use. You can checkout:
http://www.firingline.net/index.htmlhttp://www.egsw.com/home.htm

Both are great places and even rent handguns for you to tryout. No shotguns allowed.

I would also highly recommend taking a basic firearm safety course. Join the NRA--great organization and they offer many local educational courses including a Basic Firearm safety course up to advanced pistol, carbine, and home defense courses.

I go to On-Target in Laguna Niguel for handgun practice.  They're right off Crown Valley Pkwy from I-5.

27692 Camino Capistrano
Laguna Niguel, CA 92677http://www.on-targetrange.com/

They also allow rifles there but you have to take their short rifle safety course before they'll let you shoot rifles there.  It's not limited to .22lr caliber.  They'll allow AR-15 (.223) and AK-47 (7.62) calibers as well.  Thing is, it's not really fun to shoot a rifle at a range who's max distance is 25 yards.

On target doesn't allow shotguns anymore for walk-in/up "practice", but they do offer a Home Defense Shotgun course every month which does allow you to shoot there during the course.

If you want a good outdoor range that also has good long distance shooting for rifles and also a shotgun range, you'll have to go up to:

Angeles Shooting Ranges
12651 Little Tujunga Canyon
Lake View Terrace, CA 91342http://www.angelesranges.com

Ask yourself this, what type of gun would you want if you were going to be in heavy firefights for 9-10 hours a day? What type of gun would you want if you had to stop a neo-nazi cannibal at full charge from 50 yards away? You can't just wing the type of animals that are going to come when the revolution starts. You need to hit them hard, vital organs, instant kills, or risk being their next meal.

I'd want the BFG gun from DOOM. Now that's a slate wiper.

The referrals to to ranges like On Target is great advice. If you've never shot a firearm, trust me. It ain't like the movies. They are louder than you thought, and much more powerful than they appear. There is a range in Norco that rents shotguns. Try them as well.

As for real weaponry, I'd recommend a shotgun as they're easy to operate. If you're serious about handguns, one revolver again for ease of use - they don't jam, and one semi automatic. Make sure the ammunition is universal. 9mm appears to be the best choice.

Training, training, training is super important. A good gun safe a must.

Disclaimer:  I shoot muzzle-loading black powder rifles.  I am not an expert at firearms.  Consider my opinions amature.

Generally speaking, guns of smaller caliber are easier to handle and more accurate for newbies.  A gun is useless unless if you can hit the target.  A good quality .22 pistol like the Ruger Mark III will probably cost around $500, check with Turner's Outdoorsman.  .22 ammo is also cheap!  Good starting plinker.  Doesn't have the stopping power of higher-caliber guns, but if you shoot someone 8-10 times with it, I think they'd drop anyway.

There's an outdoor shooting range in Chino, including a shotgun range.  If you buy a shotgun you can take the gun there to play.  Check with Fowler's Gun Room in Tustin for shotguns.  But I'm not an expert with them so I'd defer to others here.

p.s.  I'm watching "American rifleman" TV show right now, the president of Taurus is giving his endorsement for a boy scouts marksmanship program.  Lo and behold they're running a commercial for the Taurus pistols that can fire .410 shells.  ;p  Prolly not CA legal though.

Your first step would be for both of you to take a gun safety course, widely available for a nominal charge.  Then pass the 30 question test required to purchase guns and ammunition in California.  You can't legally purchase out-of-state and bring into the state, either.  Just check any of the gun dealers in the area.  There are Turner's Outdoorsman stores located in Orange, Riverside, and Huntington Beach, for example.  Several competitors, also.  After that, you will be able to better judge what will suit your needs and disposition.  What works for you might not work for your spouse.  In my case, I grew up in the midwest with many guns in the house.  Everything from replica muzzle-loading pistols and rifles to modern shotguns and modern rifles with scopes.  With three hunters in the household, we generally had to have three of everything.  Heck, we even had a small brass cannon -- used only to make noise on the 4th of July.  It made a LOT of noise when fired.

If you have kids, or expect to have kids in the house (even occasionally) your first priority is to acknowledge that they will be curious and (mis)handle the guns if they can get to them.  Lock 'em up!  (Either the guns OR the kids...)  When age appropriate, give the kids training so the guns in the house are not novelty items.  And still keep the guns locked up while teen-age hormones rage.

California law complicates your gun selection process.  For example, I have small hands and could not find a home defense pistol that was legal here and I was comfortable handling.  The 12-guage shotgun that I've owned for 40 years is more than sufficient to drop anybody breaking through my door and break the door behind them.  They would have to be inside before I would shoot.  But the shotgun can't be stored safely in a way that makes it quickly useable.  It will take some time to remove the lock.  A pistol stored in a gun safe with an electronic lock would be more accessible.
