I realize this will not be a big enough sample to be scientific, or representative of the any particular demographic, but I am just curious.

Thanks in advance for taking part.

[quote author="skek" date=1238127921]Zero. I bought GLD in the mid 70's, sold it a few weeks ago in the low 90's, and am completely out of it now. The investment was less than 2% of the portfolio.</blockquote>

Skek made 40 bucks. He only had 2 shares of GLD...I know cause he told me.

That puts his overall portfolio to 7,000K...financially he is many years away from retiring. However considering his age, he only has 3 more years to make it work. But with mind blowing 28% percent returns...he will get there in no time. WORK IT BABY!

Now that's not fair, Bernie, er Blackvault. You aren't counting my vintage Marmaduke comic book collection or those 1980s-era Star Wars collector cups from Burger King! Those are worth big coin!</blockquote>

Huh? What are you talking about? Marmaduke? That's not what you showed me...

I knew you were going to lie about it...so I snapped a pic with my new iPhone.

[quote author="freedomCM" date=1238130567]what about other PMs? do you also count jewelry?</blockquote>

Nah, no jewelery, unless it is quite a substantial portion of your net worth. A yes to silver or platinum if you are holding it as an investment or wealth preservative, but not the family silverware.

I do not mind a thread hi-jacking at all, as long as you vote.

And you lurkers out there can vote as well, with no one knowing that you have contributed. The more votes, the better the results.

Is it safe to assume that you have a basement full of gold bars like the smaller version of fort knox?

Laugh as you might I sold my Silver Age and Partial Gold Age Comics collection..... I didn't make HUGE money, but my profit was about 200-300%. On some comics I made close to 10,000%.

As for gold I only own about 2% currently (I have about 3% of silver and less than 1% of plat.), its mainly just a fun hedge/preservation fund for now. Its so cheap that owning a few slips might be worth it..... As far as jewerly, I do own a few nice things, but they aren't horrendously expensive (a lone big ruby (4+ct), a large-ish Alexandrite (3+ct), and a ~3ct Diamond). I bought them cheap.... I'd like to get a blue diamond, but those aren't likely to be on sale...ever. Oh well.

good luck

I have neither a basement nor gold bars nor any other precious metals at my home. I am not being grouchy, just want to make sure that no one thinks that I keep valuables in my home.

They'd have to find out where you lived first....

thankfully there are 3! Count'em 3! people with my same name in Irvine....

Sheesh...

I've been 90-100% gold miners since mid oct 08</blockquote>

Sorry. Can you vote 10% to 25%? It means you have a lot.

i already voted for the other form of gold, seeing as how i don't own any of the metal just gold miners.

its really nice to see how many 0%'s there are... I'd be really worried if everyone had a bunch

The following is a letter to Bill Fleckenstein which is what got me to wondering enough to start this poll.

<em>"Hello Bill,

One of the better industry rags I get is Investment News, which does a good job of covering the independent RIA market. The latest issue has a survey in it that speaks loudly to the point you have made about the level of investment in precious metals. The survey first asks advisers what is more likely over the next 12 months: inflation or deflation. This comes down at 66.6% inflation and 33.4% deflation.

However, the next level of questions relates to how advisers are investing to deal with the environment they expect. Of those who expect inflation, only 2.8% stated that they are buying gold and/or silver! The largest response was to buying energy stocks and TIPS, while 1/3rd responded that they are doing nothing. 12.7% responded that they are purchasing commodity linked mutual funds or ETF's.

This survey supports the anecdotal experience I've had in reviewing the significant number of new portfolios we've been taking over in recent months (we were up double digits last year - love those performance chasers). I've seen a growing number of portfolios having some allocation to commodities in general via mutual funds or ETF's and the occasional managed futures fund. These allocations are typically limited to 5%, at most, of the overall portfolio.

I have seen ZERO precious metals positions. We've seen accounts from independent RIA's, fund complexes like Fidelity and wirehouse brokers - a very broad sampling of the industry. If precious metals are "over owned", then I sure as heck don't see who is "over owning" them!!! "</em>

I agree that inflation is coming, but I want to see stronger indication of it coming. For me timing is critical. Right now the stock market is more profitable than being the "house" at your local casino, and I intend to suck out every possible penny before I shift to things that can hurt my feet if I dropped them.

A stock market such as this is very rare to come by....it is fun, exciting and profitable. Playing in a dead or quiet market is harder imo, and boring as hell. I dread those days.
