For real estate agents to survive this downturn, they need to know where their businesses are going over at least the next five years, said Jason Hall, co-owner of RE/MAX Associates in San Diego.

"With fewer transactions, it's going to be a professionals-only field. ... If you don't know where your next five transactions are coming from, you won't be around next year and should start thinking about what you used to do," Hall said.
 
If you look at the DRE site under license revocations, there aren't that many. With half a million licenses outstanding, it's surprising there aren't more. Most of the revocations are for criminal convictions.http://www.dre.ca.gov/pdf_docs/rebfall07.pdf Revoked license list starts on page 4.

I advocate taking annual license fees up from their current $120 annually to about $1200-1500. Encourage these people to lead more productive lives, and use part of the increase to pay for a massive increase in enforcement.

Sixty-one percent of adults consider firefighters to have “very great prestige,” making this occupation the most prestigious on the list. Five other occupations were ranked as having “very great prestige” by over 50 percent of the adults surveyed: Scientists and teachers are considered very prestigious by 54 percent of adults, followed by doctors and military officers, who earn the prestige of 52 percent of Americans, and nurses, whom half of all aduts consider very prestigious.

Among the least prestigious occupations are real estate brokers, actors and bankers. Only 5 percent of survey participants ranked real estate brokers as very prestigious; 9 percent gave actors this label, followed by 10 percent for bankers. Accountants, entertainers, stockbrokers, union leaders, journalists, business executives and athletes all also ranked low on the list: Less than 20 percent of adults consider any of the aforementioned occupations to have “very great prestige.”

Consequently, five occupations are perceived to have “hardly any prestige at all” by at least a quarter of adults: stockbrokers (25 percent), union leaders (30 percent), entertainers (31 percent), real estate brokers (34 percent) and actors (38 percent).
 
I dont understand how accountants get such a bad rep, id like to think my CPA license has some prestige, although i myself do discriminate against other CPAs, to me you are only a real CPA if you have a big four background. I know there was Enron, MCI, Healthsouth, etc, but it is very difficult to find fraud with current audit methodoligies if management wants to conceal it.
 
A year or so ago I came across a similar study by another organization............seeing that a scientist had a high prestige rating really shocked me. I have a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry(1983 grad.) and for years when asked my profession I used to mumble a few words and change the subject. When people figured out that I was a scientist they used to say...."..I flunked chemistry in high school .......it real sucked, the teacher was a dick." There was also the stigma created by environmental movement in the 1970's that concluded that scientists had scummed up the earth with toxic chemicals and nuclear waste.
 
Locally speaking, what jobs do you think are prestigious in Orange County? Doctors? Lawyers? Pharmacists? Dentists? Business Owners? Public Officials?

I think some common characteristics of prestigious jobs are:

1. Must make over 100K/year.

2. Should require some education.

3. Could bring some fame.

Personally, I think the most prestigious local jobs are being the CEO of a famous clothing company or owner of a popular restaurant chain. I think we live in a Hollywood/Sports/Leisure-drive society - so any job that provides entertainment and pays well is prestigious to me - epecially athletes and actors.
 
I think prestige and pretense are synonymous. I have enormous respect to anyone who does their job well regardless of what it is. I have little respect for those who think I should look up to them regardless of their job performance.

RE agents finding new careers

The slumping real estate market is convincing some real estate professionals that it’s time to pack it in and try something more lucrative.

The National Association of Realtors’ membership in 2007 dropped for the first time since 1996. The membership fell 1.5% from 2006 to 1,338,001 agents, brokers and other professionals, according to the group’s Web site.

This might not seem like much of a drop but it’s a significant change from the annual membership increases of more than 10% during the peak of the housing market a few years ago. Store clerks, teachers, laid-off executives, retirees and others looking for a new career with a huge upside got into the business when real estate was hot. It seems that some of these people have decided not to pay their dues.
