BMW

C’mon guys,

Even footballers in the UK are moving away from Range Rovers.

Saw Drogba and Lamps getting out of Porsche Cayenne last week.

Ballack opened their eyes. Nice win over the Gunners, Go Blues!!

"Not sure if I could buy a jag any more. After all, it is just a ford (though it might have just been sold to an Indian company)"

Can't say I have confidence in Tata myself, but let's just hope they continue to correct the ship in the right direction.

As for BMWs, what is everyone's opinion about them vs. other Germans - Mercedes and Audi? I have one of each, and prefer their designs to BMW. I'm not a hard-core driver and all of them have more than enough performance for the average (and above average) driver, so my decisions came down to personal preference. But I do like the Z4 coupe though!

I'm looking VERY, very closely at the 135, but my cheapass...er... most cost efficient side is steering me a different direction. As it is I'd only get the Jag XKR or XJR if i could replace that wimpy 4.4L with Ford's 4.6L Cobra motor. The new 5.4L Cobra motor might be a wee bit too much for the car to handle (weight, hp, torque).

Have you looked at the M4 coupe? I'd probably look at a RS4 or S4 from audi before I got the M3.... But it looks like a nice little 135 with upgrades from Vishnu performance might be the ticket.

I can help it, every time I see one of these:

I am reminded of the front end of a '99 Cougar:

Ewww to the gee ell why

Has anyone test driven the 1 series from bmw? the one with the 300 horsepower turbo edition? I wonder if you upgrade the turbo on it how much you can get out of that v6.

Jbatz,

They only make about 250ish to the tires. Which in and of itself isn't that bad. With a chip and air filter upgrade you get a whipping 50! wheel hp. Which is quite a upgrade. While you won't beat up on Corvettes of any of the bigger powered sports cars, you will suprise them.

I've seen some factory freaks where with custom tuning, custom turbos, and some internal engine work these guys have gotten 500+hp out of these engines. Again, though, its a custom motor running who knows what for fuel.

250 hp to the wheel for less then 35k with a slim down body weight. that is awesome. not to mention bmw sport suspension. but i would like to get some real world input. someone who test driven the 1 series. how it compares to similar cars such as the evo, or sti. there are plenty of cars that can out perform these cars but not at this entry level price points.

Jbatz,

I've been there also. The 1 series is a good car and handles well, but its not in the same league as AWD cars for going around the track and quick driving. The EVO/STI cars handle SO well it is VERY anticlimatic. That being said, the EVO and STI cars are not in the same DIMENSION as the BMW in QUALITY of driving. Smoothness, comfort, quality etc. etc. etc. they just aren't there. The Asian Imports are fast hot rod cars. As BMW likes to put it, its a driving experience....

good luck

All this talk of bimmers...brings back memories of driving my friend's dad's 7-series bimmer around when we were in high school and were taking the thing over this one railroad crossing where we could get some air. Probably not the smartest thing to have done in that car, but oh the rush! My little Hyundai Accent gets sad if I think of anything else ;)

Zorn,

He he, you should see my brother's and I little Hyundai. Its a 1988 Excel. NEVER mind you could drop in a 300 wheel hp motor (that would bolt right up) in a 1900 lb car. It'd CRUSH almost any car out... fast? DANGEROUS fast... Like high end Ferrari, Lambo, exotic fast. All in a plain jane paper wrapper. I love sleepers....

-bix

Custom suspension goes a long way. The only weak thing is the brakes, nobody have brakes that will adapt to that size hub. And even if you could, the booster and brake system aren't sized for that big of a piston in the calipers. It was fast, and could take turns, but braking was a VERY scary proposition. Sleepers are usually drag oriented though.

Just FYI Troop, I don't know how much of a discount the Costco vehicle purchase program gives, but there was a LR parked in front of my local Costco today as part of the purchase program. Looks sharp!

OK, back to Jaguars...by the way, that certainly LOOKS like a Jaguar on that Landrover...but anyway..

How did Sir William Lyons come up with the name of Jaguar? "who cares" I can hear you say, but I'll tell you anyway..

He started off with some other Bloke in Blackpool, they made Sidecars for motorbikes, they were called the Swallow Sidecar company...

Then he started building Cars, he called them the S.S. which was fine untill WWII broke out, he discovered that no self respecting Englishman would be seen dead riding around in a Car with initials SS on the front grille...it had obvious conotations...

So, he called in a PR/Advertising Company, they had the bright idea of bringing a Book of Wildlife in with them, "Here Bill, pick and Animal"

He could have called the company any number of Animal names but he chose "JAGUAR"

When I first started working for BMW I discovered they had an internal Magazine called the Dixie, I was puzzled by the name untill I asked someone who had been working there for a while, it turned out BMW's first car was the BMW Dixie, which was based on the 1928 Austin Seven. I actually have a copy of a Dixie Magazine with my picture in it at my Mum's House.

You've probably noticed by now that I'm full of useless Trivia
