BMW

Lexus has a great nav system. . .touch screen and beautiful display. Only annoying thing is that you cannot access the system when the car is in motion. I understand the logic of it but a passenger cannot look up something while driving.

Check out the X5 before and the screen looks old and tiny. . .no touch screen either.

It is incredibly annoying how they have disabled so much functionality in the Toyota/Lexus nav system. There are some hacks to help but nothing that really makes it work the way it should. This is the main reason I prefer the nav system on Honda/Acura.

I'll chime in. I used to be a honda fan and thought BMWs were overpriced and overhyped. Have a TL and love the nav.

Bought my gf a 328 last year, loved the ride vs the TL and decided I needed my own BMW. Now have an M5 and will probably never purchase another Japanese car. The TL just feels like it's floating and about to tip over.

I also hate the BMW nav and Idrive, but it doesn't bother me too much.

BMWs rarely if ever offer rebates or cash back. They usually offer lease incentives in the form of lower Money factors or higher residuals. That's how I got a great deal on my M.

I am a huge fan of BMW. We've had 4 BMW's now, including an M3 and a 745Li. Both cars have Nav and the 7 series had iDrive. It took some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's OK. It's definitely not as user friendly as the Nav that comes in Acuras. BMW likes to be at the forefront of automotive technology and iDrive was one of those things that they were one of the first to introduce. However, what I appreciate BMW the most for is their performance. Luxury is easy to imitate, but performance isn't. All the BMW's we've owned have had amazing performance, even down to the first E46 325Ci that I owned. My M3 is one of the best high performance cars out of the box. I've taken this car through the canyons and it performs so beautifully. I am not crazy about the new Chris Bangle designs, so I may be a bit partial and old school, but I will always love BMW's.

I worked for BMW (Manufacturing) for six years, the best company I've ever worked for....

Did someone say they owned a 6 series? I'm too lazy to look back through the posts, I read it earlier today...

Our Daughter drives an M6, what an incredible piece of engineering...

skek, I worked at the BMW Rosslyn plant in SA, my first project was to cut the Roof of the 3 series and turn it into a Convertible, yes, we actually took a complete Body, strengthened the structure underneath then cut all the Roofs off...there was a little more to it than that but you get the picture....

So you must be driving a Jag if it was designed by Cullum....

I started my career in the auto industry with Jerry McGovern, we both started at Chrysler UK together in Coventry, England and they sponsored us through Lanchester University as it was called in those Days, it's now Coventry University, obviously we went in different directions, he's now Design Director at Land Rover. One of his best known designs in the US was the Lincoln Blackwood, last time I saw him, a few years ago he had shoulder length hair, he's had it cut since then.....but he's done some nice work at LR.....

Peter,

Regarding Land Rover, do you have any knowledge of their reliability? I like the design, but keep hearing others not liking the reliability factor. Thanks.

ok, now you're talking my language. I covet a Rover HSE....every time I see one (um, about every 5 minutes in L.A.) I say to myself, "when I make it, that's what I'm buying". Damn the crappy mileage.

Trooper,

Those are very nice SUV's, but they aren't the most reliable things on the planet. Plus when you talk crappy milage, you are talking close to single digits in city.... I can tell you from expereince its not a fun thing.

I took out a HELOC last year with a teaser rate so that I could buy my first BMW, an X5. Best vehicle I've owned by a mile. Anyway, I got to get back to my job at Panda Express... what a wonderful country!

Regarding the Rover HSE, a friend of mine recently sold his due to multiple problems he was experiencing. Thankfully, it was under warranty but I think all of the repairs, malfunctions, and inconvenience finally drove him to selling it at quite a discount.

Overall, he had it for 15months, ultimately felt it wasn’t worth the trouble.

He believed that under BWW they were very reliable. Once the brand was sold to Ford he felt that reliability declined and with it’s acquisition by Tata feels that will continue to be the case. I would've bought it from him, the reliability and multiple repairs chased me away.

reason, I know little about reliability on the Range Rover although they do have the 4.2 Jaguar engine which has been around for years, I guess it's a case of making sure it comes with a good warranty...

skek, how do you like your new XF? I've yet to see one in real life, they do look nice though....

My last Jag was a 2004 XJR, my 9th Jag....

As far as Tata taking over Jaguar/Landrover I must admit I was more than a little concerned, however, the People at Jaguar seem to be very happy about it because they're going to keep the Company in Coventry and Castle Bromwich along with their design center in Whitley (Coventry), Jaguar were totally mis-managed by Ford, when they took over in 89 quality improved, then they made a huge mistake by trying to push Jaguar into trying to turn them into a mass producer by introducing the Baby X-Type....they should have produced the F-Type as originally planned, a 2-seater sports Car....this picture was taken in 2000 and in my opinion it still looks good today...

Jaguar F-Type

Sorry, this is a BMW thread, I didn't mean to hi-jack it...

My wife drives a 2006 Beetle Convertible, the new body style with the 5 Cyclinder engine and 6-speed transmission....it's a nice Car, it's her baby...

One Day we were at the Carwash behind a Z4 (this is where we get back to the thread) I asked her if she'd like one (at least I could drive it too) and she said "Sure, I'd like one of those next time", so I looked them up on BMW's site...problem is, they start out at $43,600!!

Does anyone know how they are for reliability, performance and Gas Mileage...? Actually, she only has a 2 mile commute so mileage is a mute point, so how about re-sale value?

That F-Type was what I wanted to buy at the time, but timing didn't work out. I needed to buy by end of 2000. Then it never got produced. What a shame, that is a beautiful design. I'm targeting the XF... hopefully this gets them back on track as the maker of the best looking cars in the world. They did a good redesign job on the XK, and XF one-ups that. And as far as I'm concerned, the XJ should never go away from their basic trademark appearance. Just freshening it up every few years as they have done so far is perfect.

Not sure if I could buy a jag any more. After all, it is just a ford (though it might have just been sold to an Indian company)
