I can see that. We can't make a graduation in Michigan in June and told my wife to cut a check for the total cost of the trip as a gift. If we had attended the graduation we would have given less.

Honestly it's cheaper for me NOT to go to some weddings even if it's somewhat local.  So yea, like qwerty said, bigger gift bc I'm not forking over for travel, hotel, babysitter, new outfit, etc, etc, and I still come out ahead.

I'm getting married this summer, and I find it quite peculiar that the people who cannot make our wedding are giving us a lot MORE $$$ than the people who are attending.  The people who can't make it, are sending us cards and one dude stuffed hundred dollar bills in the envelope.  Another dude gave me a lump sum Chase cashier's check!  LOL.

We also set up an online fund page where people can PayPal us money.  You can even use credit cards or bank account but we lose like 2.5%.

So what are you going to do with the cash?
