I think it's overrated too.
I like their Potato Balls though (only when I don't have to wait 10+ min).

I prefer Moulin in Newport and Laguna Beach more.
SideCar in Costa Mesa is really good also, although they close at 4pm.

For Irvine local ones:
From 85 Degrees, Sea Salt Iced Coffee is pretty much the only good one.
From Paris Baguette, White Toast Bread and Sweet Potato Pastry are good. Of course these are only based on my taste.
Many seem to like Strawberry Croissants from there also.
Moulin is definitely a treat. Portos potato balls is good but not worth the wait.
I would like to add a few of my favs

Cream Pan in Tustin (Japanese bakery) the cream they use in their bread and strawberry croissants  is the best and suitable for older people who fear desserts that are too sweet.  For sure a crowd pleaser at company outings.  My other favorite are the Sunmerry Bakery next to taiko.  Their cakes and bread are just as good as 85 degree.  If you are looking for legit tiramisu, one of my favs is Kawaii Bakery in Fountain Valley.  Really good organic bread is Duke's Bakery in Rowland (the Irvine one doesn't have half the selection)

+1

For those who don't like "too sweet" cakes, Japanese bakeries tend to tone it down a bit.  I used to order Christmas cakes from here: http://www.bonjourpastry.com/

And cheese cake sticks from here: http://www.patisseriechantilly.com/

This thread reminds me of Jean Paul?s Goodies in Laguna Beach, closed as of Aug 2014 ish.  The owner was an angry French guy and, reading angry internet reviews of his place while eating his pastries was my weekend entertainment years ago.

Big fan of Porto's, hopefully one day they open one in Irvine.

If anyone is looking for sweets that aren't too sweet, I highly recommend the blueberry chiffon cake at Paris Baguette.  Very light and fluffy.

Hope the line is not as long now since it's been open for a few month now.

I also like Sunmerry and the new Paris Baguette too.

Seems like the Paris Baguette in Zion Market has more selection than the new one in Crossroads.

Not too far from my work today.. going to grab some of them BALLZ!!!

I recant my ?overrated? remark.

I actually got to try many other things (everyone who bring Porto?s to any gathering only brings cheese rolls) recently at the Buena Park location. We stayed there for a long time. Really nice design but still pretty crowded even until now.
