Is Harvard Unfair to Asian-Americans?

Great article.  Chinese are socially selfish...the culture is centered around the family, not the country.  They don't care about social justice, they care about maximizing benefit to their family.  That's what this lawsuit is about.

The story is about AA but you are singling out Chinese. I don't condone that but couldn't find myself an excuse to disagree.

I am singling out Chinese because I am Chinese and comfortable speaking about it.  Story is about AAs but really just about Chinese, Koreans, and Indians.

Jeff Yang's article has its merits but it is gross generalization to paint all Chinese families that way. Most Chinese people I know are either progressive enough or cynical enough not to support or care about the law suit and the recent complaint (because they are all focusing on the cemetery issue in their backyard).

Both camps need their poster child so Ivies are not above Ed Blum. Jane Dou or John Doe, everything is political, is it not? Pointing out Ed being a Replublican doesn't help Jeff's rhetoric. Richard Sanders is a Democrat and he is spearheading a similar fight in the UC systems. Tim Groseclose who identifies with Democrat was forced out of UC systems because of his report on racial bias against Asian Americans (not Chinese in particular).

IMHO, it is quite ungracious for Jeff to criticize the way he was brought up as if he was victimized for being the child of an immigrant family. Were it not for his parents' pursue for better life, and the extra mom's homework and insistence, could he have gotten into any Ivy schools at all? After all he thought he deserved a place at Harvard by not being 'Asian' enough.

He and his sister got in as the result of the 'holistic' approach. Good for them and naturally he is expected to side with the schools. I'd not be surprised that his alma mater instigated this article in the first place. Nice try, Jeff Dou.

Okay. Let me put it down in my book:

Nope...I'm just realistic about my heritage.  Like every other heritage/culture, Chinese culture has good and bad points.  Recognizing the the bad points and trying to change them is a good thing.

In the article, he talks about 69% of AA supporting affirmative action.  What he is talking about is use of AA as the "model minority" and to justify particular movements (such as the anti-AA groups).

Again...when one talks about AA in this context, it's almost always just about Chinese, Koreans, and Indians.

The other part of the discussion point you are missing is that many first generation AA parents think of success and failure as black and white...if you get into Harvard you are a success, otherwise you fail.  That is not a healthy viewpoint.

From 1995 to 1998 ? using pre- and post-Prop. 209 findings ? the number of blacks, Latinos and Native Americans in the University of California all declined, according to the most recent online data from the UC Office of the President. Yet the number of Asians rose by 12 percent in the same time period.

The Asian groups at the press conference Friday said their community performed well in school and standardized tests, so these students deserve to be placed in California?s top universities.

Not all Asians do well in academics. Generally speaking, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islanders and Filipinos do not do as well as their Indian, Korean and Chinese counterparts.

Hernandez said SCA 5 gives students of all backgrounds a chance to attend California?s best universities.

?What makes a society and a country better is its diversity and how we interact,? Hernandez said. ?Look at the examples of how we purposely try to diversify. Look at Covered California. It would be discriminatory if we did not try to create communities of interest.?

High School Senior Accepted to 26 Universities, Offered $3 Million in Scholarships

By Kaylee Heck

It's no secret that getting into college is growing more competitive and the cost for a college education is high.

But one graduating senior in Chicago doesn?t have to stress about it.

Arianna Alexander was accepted into 26 colleges ? including six Ivy League universities ? and was awarded a combined total of more than $3 million in scholarships, ABC?s Chicago station WLS reported.

Arianna graduated as valedictorian of her class at Kenwood Academy High School in Chicago, Illinois, and earned a 5.1 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

"It was a lot to take in. I received emails, letters. It was just like, ?Come here, come here!? They were bombarding me with all this information,? Arianna told WLS.

Among all the acceptances were scholarship offers that mean Arianna can afford college and not worry about the cost.

Arianna was inspired to aim high with encouragement from her parents and seeing a previous Kenwood student awarded with about $1 million in scholarships.

?I planted the seed in Arianna?s mind that you can do the same thing,? her father Pierre Alexander told WLS.

?So when the process got started and a million was achieved, let?s go for two. I said let?s go for three and she did it,? he added.

Ultimately, Arianna sorted through her dozens of options and made the decision to attend the University of Pennsylvania this fall, thanks to the advice from one of her teachers, Paul Brush, WLS reported.

?He said, ?Do you know about the Wharton School of Business? ?I said, 'I have no idea what you?re talking about,?? she told WLS.

The Gates Scholarship recipient plans to become an entrepreneur and told WLS she?s already starting the groundwork on the menus for the four restaurants she plans to own.

The Alexander family and Kenwood Academy did not immediately respond to ABC News? request for comment.

Asian parents only know a dozen of top schools. The usual household names. Even their child is not qualified they demand him or her apply anyway. The top colleges welcome that as long the application fee is not waived. The more dummy applicants the lower the acceptance rate. The lower the rate the higher the Forbes and U.S. News rankings. The last few years because Pomona landed at the top spots the school applicants surged exponentially. The power of media plays a big part. One really funny thing about the Chinese business phone book directory that I see sometimes piled up high outside a popular Chinese market or popular dim sum restaurants there is an entire section at the back of the book that lists colleges stats and rankings. As expected the usual household names. The trick is to apply for the top colleges not so well known among west coast AA parents. Unfortunately there are the east coast parents that know about the less westcoast well knowns from their phone book like Williams, Vandebult, Emory, Colby, Georgetown, and Swarthmore that also are application impacted but not as bad as the Ivies.

And how does one get 5.1 GPA?

This article explains a lot about the new trend in Chinese and education these days. Growing up in Richmond Hills Ontario Canada, there was an influx of Chinese to the area because of 1997. The Chinese back then was filthy rich but as educated as a rock. The kids I went to school with was as stupid as you can get. They were all millionaires with an elementary education. The same goes for Chinese in Vancouver. Moving to California a few years ago, I was shocked at the new breed of Chinese...

Is PE considered a class? You can get an A in it right and that is only 4.0 pts.  If you can exclude PE, and get all As in your other classes that give 5.0, then you can get a 5.1 GPA?......hm I think I mathd wrong...

In anycase grade inflation exists and all schools should give out 8.0 GPAs...just double that shit.

Hehe. I was just coming over to see if this had been mentioned yet.

Sorry, Qwerty. The value of your sperm / Fake Baby Daddy / College App business just plummeted thanks to "trans-racial". Now that we can all be whatever the heck we want to be simply by wishing hard enough and perpetuating stereotypes.

I believe I am invisible to the I.R.S. I am also "trans-economic". A multi-billionaire stuck in a regular person's body.

Yup.

Ah, so it turns out we may be soulmates after all. Interesting. I thought I detected a hint of it in your prior posts as well but wasn't quite sure. Indeed, I am conservative through and through.
