I placed my order. Who else has?
Just one question for IR. How do they decide whether to go paperback or hardcover?</blockquote>
Cost is the main reason. I wanted to make the book as inexpensive as possible. A hardcover would have cost $10 more per book to produce. I will probably make a hardcover available next year. If you publish both simultaneously, your sales rank on Amazon will suffer as you split your sales between the two editions.
Surprisingly enough, the cost of self-publication is not much greater than what regular publishers pay. I could lower the book cost by a buck or two if I ran 10,000 copies, but the risk isn't worth the reward. Quite honestly, I don't know how publishers make any money. The margins on books are not that high, and selling more than 10,000 copies is pretty rare.
