First Day of School Tips

All of our kids have the lunch accounts but they almost never use it.  They don't want to spend the extra time waiting in line.  And neither do their particular friends.  Also, since middle schoolers go in last, I heard they often run out of the main entr?e so all they have left is fruit or something small.  And, they still have to pay the same price.  My middle schoolers say they'd rather use the extra time to do some of their homework so that they can play more at home.  :p

Man... school staring in August is just wrong.

I sent one back to school two weeks ago- TUSD will start next week.

I had to drop the Suffer-more Sophomore at the curb. Didn't even dare to ask if she wanted to be walked to the classroom. Younger one is still OK with me walking with her, probably. Our last year at Hicks.

Any Orchard Hills parents? What are your thoughts about sending fifth grader to Middle School?

I don't think there's any real difference b/t 6-8 middle schools and 7-8 middle schools but there have been some studies that show students preform better in K-8 schools versus those that need to make a middle school transition.  So Beacon Park Elementary FTW!

Yeah... why is TUSD middle school 6-7-8?

What is middle/jr high in other districts?

Pretty sure middle school means 6-7-8...7-8 is junior high.
Not in IUSD.

All 7-8 schools are called "Middle Schools":

More like 5-6-7-8 for Hicks Canyon kids. I am not ready for this transition, but don't want to change to another elementary school also.

IHO- what grade are your kids now? Jr High?

Ok...

new backpack
funded myschoolbucks acct
check parent portal later today for teacher name
watch out for crazy/late parents drop off shenanigans in front of school/parking
go get Baskin robbins after school :)

And good luck to all the new BP kids starting school.  Hope things go smooth.

Do people still send all the school supplies on the first day?

We wait until the 2nd or 3rd day because many times, the teacher does not need everything on the school-wide list or might want something not on the list. It also makes it easier for the kids on the first day to not carry around all that stuff (see previous post where a kid's bag broke and all his stuff spilled out and he had no parents there to help him).

Those 1st day supplies, I would leave most at home, maybe bring crayons, pencil, glue stick, a few sheets of paper in a folder.....stuff that fits comfortably in a backpack.  You bring the whole box, waste of effort.  Don't need a full ream of white paper and most likely it will get tossed into the community pile for the whole class.  Socialism 101
