Arstechnica Article: Rare fungal infections that destroy eyeballs and kill are on the rise in India
People with diabetes are particularly vulnerable to the aggressive fungus.

As the pandemic coronavirus continues to ravage India, doctors are reporting a disturbing uptick in cases of a rare, potentially fatal fungal infection among people recovered or recovering from COVID-19.

The infection is called mucormycosis, or sometimes ?black fungus? in media reports, and it appears to be attacking COVID-19 patients through the nose and sinuses, where it can aggressively spread to facial bones, the eyes, and even the brain (rhinocerebral mucormycosis). In other cases, the fungus can also attack the lungs, breaks in the skin, and the gastrointestinal system or spread throughout the body in the blood stream.

If the fungus is able to spread to the eyes, patients may develop blurred vision, drooping eyelids, swelling, and vision loss. Patients may even need to have their eyes surgically removed to prevent the infection from spreading further, according to doctors who spoke to the BBC.

Cbs News: CDC advisory committee recommends Pfizer's COVID vaccine for kids as young as 12

A panel of independent advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention voted on Wednesday to recommend Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents age 12 to 15, clearing one of the final remaining hurdles to making the shots available to all Americans as young as 12.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' recommendations are expected to be formally adopted by the CDC director, which would allow for a widespread rollout of shots for adolescents to begin within the coming days. The panel voted 14-0 in favor of the move, with one member abstaining.

My 78 year old father in law and his same age girl friend both had Covid late September 2021.  They didn't go to the doctors and just stayed in bed for a week or so (no fever, just fatigue, cough and transient change in taste).

Last week, they had a doctor's visit for the girl friend and was told she should get the vaccine before her surgery because Covid antibodies only last for 3 months.  The girl friend thought that they may have lasted longer, so requested an antibody test after the Dr told her that she was foolish to think she would still have antibodies.

Well, this was last week (May 2021), and they both did the antibody test and found out that they still had Covid antibodies!  Imagine that.  It is pretty incredible that we haven't yet dialed in on how long antibodies last in someone who had Covid.

 
They should still get vaccinated, as it increases antibody levels 5x-10x in folks who were infected, and likely increases persistence.  Which adds up to reduced symptoms if re-infected.
 
Cdc says you can go maskless indoors if you are fully vaccinated but defer to local rules/regulations.

I didn?t think that news would come for another month or two to let more people get fully vaccinated. It will be interesting to see when stores remove the mask requirement

I think it may be a long time. There is a big vaccine resistance. (They say antibodies as an excuse. But I don?t think all antivaxers have the antibodies.)

We are relatively safe in OC at the moment.  Essentially yellow level rates but not yet yellow, 1.8 cases per day per / 100K residents.  Hopefully it continues down through the fall. 

Rationally, I should be much more comfortable being on a patio for dinner than I am given metrics.

While we have hot zones like Michigan, we have large swaths that are doing fairly well. Most of Florida is consider nationally at orange and pushing around 20 cases per day/100K.

Looking forward to summer and slightly worried for fall.

Overall I suspect they?re trying to encourage vaccination by saying, get vaccinated, you?ll eventually be able to go mask free.  Maybe we need when 90% are vaccinated or daily cases are below 1.0/100K, masks can be removed. 

Ultimately, this isn?t about now, this is about what rate of transmission we will have come Christmas and the kids are back in school. If 40% or more of the kids aren?t vaccinated and 30% of adults aren?t, getting lulled regularly high school classrooms and activities will have covid doing lulz.

Republican Lauren Boebert stated there hadn't been a single COVID-19 death in Texas since mask restrictions ended in March. Data shows thousands had, in fact, died.

They did not report memorial weekend. There is called padding or hiding the stats. It could be good or bad. But we do not know since they did not release the stats.
