2012: Year of the [insert tablet here]?!?

humm... IHO, looks like our wait is over as well...

ASUS Eee Pad Memo ME171 Officially Announced, coming to US in Q2
We?re getting a 1.2GHz dual-core processor inside so it won?t be quite as current as its bigger brother. It?ll be graced with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, as expected. A 5 megapixel camera that can shoot 1080p HD video can be found on the rear of the device with a 1.2 megapixel camera on the front of it.

& big brother...

ASUS Eee Pad MeMo ME370T to be Quad-Core 7 Inch Tablet
Whereas the ME171 houses a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, the Eee Pad MeMo ME370T will house NVIDIA?s quad-core Tegra 3 processor.

A 7" Transformer Prime with quadcore for $249 actually sounds attractive.

Is that picture right? If it's really running 4.0 ICS (or even 3.x Honeycomb)... there is no need for those icons on the bezel.

As CES 2012 wraps up, the tablets that were announced that I'm interested in are:

ASUS Transformer Prime (TF700T)
The 7" ASUS Transformer Prime with Tegra 3 (no name announced yet)
Acer Iconia A700
iPad 3 (no mention of this yet)

Lenovo's Ideapad K2010 is going to be released in China first and how knows when in the US so not really interested in this.  For that matter, I don't know when any of these will truly be released so I'm going to try to wait another month to figure out what I want, but constantly waiting for new tech is useless at some point because new fangled models come out all the time.  Bah..

Looks like the original TF won't be eating Ice Cream until February:

This is reminiscent of when Honeycomb came out last year... there probably won't be a stable version of ICS until the 2nd half of the year.

Also... there is word that Google will be doing a Nexus-type premium 7" tablet for $199. I think that's the one I'm going to wait for.

What if ASUS comes out with the rumored 7" Prime with Tegra 3 for $250?

But for that $199, do you think the specs will be good enough for video, apps, gaming and streaming media?

Yeah.. I can see how this might play out this year... I forget, just Windows 8 itself is like $200 alone, while Android is -Free-

Windows 8 tablets could be priced right out of contention

Yep... they have to do the convertible tablet/notebook route or else they won't get traction over $500.

And how is battery life? That's the big issue... with a notebook... there is room for bigger batteries in the keyboard deck... not so much in a thin tablet form factor.

And for tablets, the app store/market is huge and makes a difference.  Win8 tablets will be way behind on that and it would take a lot of work to get devs to get onto that.
