Hi TI Friends,

I'm moving back to So Cal (after 16years living in the NE) and landing in Woodbury.

We have young kids and have been reading about the elementary...just wanted to get your take / tap into the vast knowledge/experience base on TI :)

1.  Is it that bad as I've read..."e.g., Some teachers close to retirement care very little about the kids..."

2.  Why such the disparity on the OC register ranking b/w WB and SG elementary schools which are very close to each other?  Blue ribbon vs. none...

Just surprised at such a wide gap at 2 schools in the same district so close to each other...does SG somehow have more caring teachers?  Better administrators??

Don't sweat it, Woodbury Elementary is a fine school.  I know folks that send their kids there, they're happy.  A lot of Woodbury residents send their kids to other schools cuz of the year around aspect or they delude themselves thinking neighboring elementary schools are better.

As an aside, I hear Cypress is quite the mess, with zero diversity even by Irvine standards.

then its schools should have the highest API scores in no time. which means CV will be pricier than OH :-)

Cypress is a little ragged right now because everything is new.  They're still finishing up construction.  Diversity-wise...it's decent.  A lot of Middle Eastern and Indians, some Asians and Caucasians.  I don't really know how it compares with other schools but my guess would be that there was a lower Asian population as compared to Indians and Middle Easterners.
 
All Irvine elementary are fine.  Relatively speaking, Woodbury is a little behind Stonegate in API scores but its 3-year average is still 921 with a Statewide ranking of 10. 

The bigger complaint about Woodbury is that it zoned into Irvine High...that issue will be resolved in a few years with it now being zoned into the 5th HS.

Where are the "low income" apartments?  And when you say "low income" that's a relative term, right?  I thought Irvine in general and woodbury specifically was tough to get into if you were living on public assistance?  Guess I have a lot to learn.

Where are the "low income" apartments?  And when you say "low income" that's a relative term, right?  I thought Irvine in general and woodbury specifically was tough to get into if you were living on public assistance?  Guess I have a lot to learn.

It's relative.  Every city has to ensure a certain segment of the residential unit to be "low income" housing.  Irvine has actually be pretty bad about the matter but one of the ways it meet the quota is to build apartments.  Woodbury has 5 apartment complexes while Stonegate has two.

According to the state, Woodbury had 63 socioeconomically disadvantage students or about 11.4% of the total school population in 2012.  Stonegate had 41 or about 8.7 percent of the total population.

The Greatschool stat is wrong in that 56% of Stonegate students in 2012 were Asian (51% in 2011).  The increased number of Asians did help Stonegate's score but Stonegate's scores were pretty much higher across the board than Woodbury.

Stonegate did score a 9 for its Similar School Rating while Woodbury scored a 6.

Again...it's pretty insignificant stuff...especially for elementary.  Both Woodbury and Stonegate kids feed into Jeffrey Trail and the new HS in a few years so they'll end up in the same places.

It will be interesting to see how many "low income" housing there will be in the Great Park and how that effects the new K-8 school as well as HS#5.

Haha, there are no "projects" in Irvine like in Chicago or D.C.  If nobody mentioned the low income housing, you would never notice them.  They look like every other Irvine apartment complex.

What Irvinecommuter said is true.  All of these elementary schools in Stonegate, Woodbury, Portola Springs and Cypress Village will feed into the same middle and high school once the new high school is built.

It's even more inconspicuous...a portion of each apartment complex is designated "low income".  So the "low income" population is spread out...I can hear the screams now :)

Except for Cypress Village.  Cypress Village will feed into same middle school with others but high school will remain in Irvine High.




 
Irvine High and the Apartment Row will keep CV housing price in check. CV is just a newer version of Irvine ghetto villages, like Deerfield and Walnut village.

May be we should just rename Cypress Village to Cypress Hill Village,  make it sound more ghetto.
