Probably not news to some, but for the rest of us MacroHard has confirmed Windows XP will no long be available after June 30th, 08. Link, another link. There is an exception for low end systems.

I haven?t tried Vista but I?ve spoken to several people that have and what I?m hearing isn?t great. Lots of driver issues mostly, some comments about the increased system requirements. I have read some references to Vista being this decade?s ME. We have XP on four computers and like it. It has been dead solid for the most part and does everything just fine.

My main ?puter is about three years old now, and I tend to build a new one every 4-5 years. I am considering buying a copy of XP Pro $140 from Newegg and squirreling it away for a new system. I know Linux is out there, but I don?t know much about it and don?t have the time or interest to possibly have to search out the myriad tweaks and solutions to make the Penguin run with the 800 pound gorilla.

What say yee?

Just because they are no longer loading onto new PCs doesn't mean they won't be supporting it with patches for another 5 years or so. The new computers are built to meet the Vista standards and any PC you build from future available parts will meet Vista standards. The driver issues were a problem at launch but have largely been addressed by the manufacturers who create them in the first place. The new Service Pack for Vista will resolve much of the complaints just as SP1 for XP addressed many of the original complaints. I really wouldn't worry too much about saving a copy of XP unless you have specific older programs that are no longer being supported by their creators and will only run on XP or older operating systems.

I'm not qualified to answer this, in fact, we just bought my Mum a new Computer in the UK (they only come with Vista there too), anyway, Eff was a great help in helping us to decide which one to get, Thanks Eff!!

But in any case, after using Mac for many years my last Mac Laptop died last December so I bought a new one with Vista, I've been really happy with it, the transiton wasn't too bad because I use a PC at work and probably spend 40% of my time on it...

I only use it for lightwieght stuff such as e-mails, surfing the web, Pictures and Videos etc and so far Vista has been great!

But that's only a non-Geek point of view :-S

Microsoft Windows Life-Cycle Policy:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx

Retail license for XP will end on June 30, 2008, but system builder licenses are still avail until Jan 31st, 2009. So you can probably still order a Dell with XP Pro instead of Vista until Jan next year.

For ultra low-cost PC's, Windows XP Home edition license will be avail until June 30, 2010, but that really doesn't apply to most of us, unless if you're buying an Asus Eee PC 900 with WinXP or something.
