Windows Sliding Up/Down Vertically or Windows Slide Right/Left Horizontally

Do you prefer your windows sliding up/down vertically or windows sliding right/left horizontally? What are your pros & cons of both? We love the old fashion feel of sliding our windows up and down; reminds me of our old apartment built in the 50s. Our cat loves the extra space of having the entire window sill open versus one half being glass. We love how these windows are making a come back! That was a selling point to our current rental?

Since most window treatments are of the vertical variety... windows that operate the same way are ideal.

Most times, in a tall window, it doesn't make sense to slide horizontally. The only concern is windows in children's rooms where it could be slammed on small fingers.

[quote author="Astute Observer" date=1237006440]From engineering point of view, I think it has to do with the size of the window, and the ration of the width and height. One make more sense than the others depends on the parameters, so I am not going to cast my vote.</blockquote>

humm, that would make sense, but you can still have a preference; that would be a huge consideration when buying. I hope IR2 is listening, these polls would all make great trial closing questions...

We have this in the US. Builders are too cheap to buy them for the homes. You will find them in Shady.

VIVA Vinyl windows and frontal garages!!!!

Vinyl windows in the industry is viewed like a Geo Metro or Ford Focus. Vinyl windows is like a plastic basket on Peter UK's handle bar. When the consumers don't know any better that is where the builders make money by using cheap windows.

The spanish roof tiles are not real they are painted concrete. The real stuff is made from clay. Concrete tile $= 1/4 of clay tile $$$$

The window styles when the leaf moves up and down direction are either single hung or double hung.

single hung is when only the bottom leaf is operable (air comes in but the hot air get trap in the upper part of the room). When there are closed drapes over the window heat is trapped between drape and glass. House would get hotter by conduction. Window screens are along the bottom half only and they look orderly on the exterior elevation. The disadvantage is the fixed bar interrupts view right at eye level. The window mechanism needs adjustment when window loses balance and tension. The window would not stay in the up position. The limited window opening is difficult for fire rescue operation since only the lower half operates. An average size fireman can't carry a victim on his shoulder through the window.

Double hung is when the upper leaf also moves in-addition to the lower leaf (cold air comes in from the bottom and hot air exit out to the top) When drapes are closed the trapped heat between drapes and glass is dissipated out through the upper opening by convection and thus keeping the house cool. Window screens is placed over the entire window. This type of windows are very expensive and almost never found in production homes. Since both leaves move the fixed middle bar is adjusted as not to block view. Both leaves could be snapped out for fire rescue access.

Sliders are the cheapest windows in the market and widely used in tract houses. Window screen placement is chaotic. Bottom track collect water, dirt and dead bugs. Firemen love this type of windows due to the full height openings that allow the ease of rescue operation.

Windows with a crank are casement windows. Glass is dirty inside and outside. Wind in a concern when the window is secured only by the hinge side and the force can bent the arm mechanism. Casement is expensive and it does look the best. There is no visible screen from the outside when all windows are closed. Firemen also love this type of windows too.
