I heard that some South East Asian culture views one-story house as low class, while multi-story house is more prestige. Is there any merit to that?

Hey we have it in America too but in different form.

The main reason for Southeast Asian houses on stilts is the flood caused by typhoon and high tide where area drainage is often inadequate for developing countries.
