I am noticing an interesting 20 year period in the Dow Jones from 1960 - 1980. The Dow Jones stayed pretty much flat during these 20 years average a 1.27% gain every year.

Dow Jones: 616.59 in january 1960

Dow Jones: 683.53 in january 1970

Dow Jones: 785.75 in jaunary 1980

We then had a twenty year bull stock market from 1980 - 2000. Is it possible that we can face a similar scenario from 2000 - 2020 where the dow jones was pretty flat during the 20 years of 1960 - 1980. Two things that are similar is that the dollar lost a lot of value from 1970 - 1980 and also the interest rate was adsurdly high. Perhaps we will never see 6% 30 year mortgages in our life time.

Dow Jones: 10921.91 in january 2000

Dow Jones: 12107.65 in january 2010

Dow Jones: 13918.32 in january 2020

Remember in July 2002, dow jones had a low of 7591.92.

How many of you believe that these are the numbers we will see for dow jones in 2010 and 2020? How many of you would disagree (higher/lower) and please state your reasons why. Obviously Emerging markets back then was very different back then from what it is now.

Lawyerliz,

I am getting the impression that many on this board on not very interested in the stock market. I can totally understand seeing how volitale this market has been? Just a question for you? What percent of your stock portfolio would say is in allocated in U.S. equities/Foreign equities/Gold?

I agree with you. I bet you the DOW will be at the same levels of where we were back in year 2000. Sad isn't it? Imagine putting money in the stock market 10 years and you are still in the same place 10 years later.
