Not that its a bad place to work (in downtown proper), but its just so far coming up through 7th street. They really needed to continue the 22 west right through to the 710 at the harbor bridges.

I'd move in a heartbeat if I got a full-time job out in Riverside, but I think the schools for kids would be an issue for most. And then, what about her husband? If he works in OC, his commute will be hell.

I would never, ever, live in Riverside or its surrounding suburbs. The weather is dreadful, the air quality is poor, and there is a distinct flavor of white-trash everywhere. (Yorba Linda being about as close as I would consider, and even then it would have to be a sweet deal). As a life-long OC native, there are some things you just don't do.

Living in Riverside would only make sense for me if my husband's work is also there (which it is not). Once we had kids, we needed to settle where the public schools are great, the neighborhoods/communities are safe, and ethnic diversity is the norm. Irvine seem to offer that and we have been very happy so far.

Live in North Santa Ana, work in South Santa Ana. It takes me longer to get home from work than my colleagues in San Juan Capistrano.

Riverside proper does not have a white-trashy feel, IMHO. Now, there's a hood (Eastside), and a barrio (Casa Blanca), but for white trashyness, you probably have to go out in the desert more, or to Rubidoux, or San Bernardino County. Maybe La Sierra a bit. Overall, there are certainly more hispanics than white trash.

The air quality certainly is bad (although much better than when I was a child), and it is hotter than the OC.

Drive's a bit far, but, again, I'd rather deal with the commute (against traffic) than live in the IE. Air quality, schools, temperature... it is seriously 20 degrees cooler in Irvine than in Fonana on a normal summer day. Plus, I just feel closer to civilization. You know what those cows smell like driving through Corona?? American Lung Assoc says that San Bernadino and Riverside counties had the worst air quality in the nation in 2005.

...And I can rationalize that my wife works in Newport Beach, so it's a good "in-between." I fantasize that one day I can transfer to Irvine.

how about those of us who out in the field! I'm mostly in my car all day... I go as far up into LA as the South Bay, all the way out to Brea and down into Lake Forest / San Clemente... yes I have a lot of ground to cover...

Traffic on the 15 is hit or miss... but the 15 is definitely the worst part of the commute. My commute's 50 miles. With traffic, about 1 hr door to door; without about 45 mins. Doable, but definitely not ideal. If it wasn't such a great job, I'd be looking for another. Most of the people in my dept commute about the same. We're definitely not doing the environment any favors.

If it was with traffic, I'd definitely have succumbed to road rage by now.. Thankfully it's mostly against, so it's not ever too bad.
