A 5'-5" middle age man with greasy hair, a pack of cigarette, matches from a casino, dark Khaki pants, T-shirt with fake designer logo, slightly stained white apron but taken off placed on passenger seat, Chinese newspaper at the back seat, Several (not 99 Ranch) Chinese supermarket bags and a duffel bag in the truck with a button shirt, several horse racing stubs and a promotional pen from Commerce Casino in the door pockets, in an older model Lexus that was purchased second hand from an Alhambra car dealership or Longo in El Monte.
Get away car probably left northbound on the 5 but did not stay on the 5 between the stretch of 91 and 605 but took 91 westbound and then 605 northbound to the 10 westbound.
I love this post, it is so great. I especially love the route for the getaway car, but I think it probably stayed on the 91 until the 710 north, then east on the 10.
I would dispute the 710 north due to a high presence of cops along this stretch of Hispanic and Black gang corridor. 605 is a lot easier to blend in while the 5 is a freakin nightmare with all those road construction.
i seem to recall that most irvine pd are retired lapd, so they should have sufficient experience on board

Related to this discussion... I was a victim of credit card fraud a couple of years ago. My wife reported this to IPD who caught and arrested a waiter from Tri-Village Resturant. (I used my card at this restuarant just prior to the fraud). After this experience the organized crime theory is actually plausible IMO... or my experience could have just been an isolated incident.

Interesting, the LA times "police said it was unclear whether the fatal bullet was fired by an assailant or was self-inflicted, and officers did not know how many shots were fired." Is it possible that it was a suicide?
I was talking to someone who speculated that it could be related to organized crime although he has no more details than what he heard on the news. He very authoritatively said (after taking a class on the subject), that many workers in Chinese restaurants are "victims" of human smuggling and have to work unpaid to pay off their debts they incurred from being brought here.

BK is spot on about the asian gambler thing.

It totally did not make sense for multiple self inflicted shots. How bad of a shooter for him to had missed his own body or his own brain?
I will have to forgive Irvine PD for not having proper experience dealing with this sort of crime when they have dealt only with potato chip shoplifters at Gelson or Northpark residents running a stop sign.
Due to their lack of experience they might have botched the crime scene evident collection. The killer eventually might get off on this technicality.

There's tons of construction on the 710 on-ramps too. I recently got trapped on the sidestreets somewhere near compton/lynwood trying to get onto the 710 due to all of the detours. Being from Irvine, I thought I was going to die looking for a way out of this "ghetto". interesting neighboorhood, though. lots of for sale signs and yard sales with clothes hanging on the metal fences.

This is another reason why I thought the assassin took the north 605. Chinese New Year was the time that most restaurant owners paid their dues in Lai See. The timing of this murder shortly after Chinese New Year could be a possibility that the Tri-Village restaurant forgot about the Lai See.ABC123 said:

Police seek man seen at deadly Irvine shooting scene
Officials say man found dead in white Lexus may have worked nearby.

IRVINE – Police today are looking for a suspect in the shooting death of a man found parked behind an Irvine restaurant.
An overnight search failed to turn up a man seen leaving the scene of the crime.
Police at about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday found the man shot to death inside a white Lexus parked behind a row of restaurants in an Albertsons shopping center at Jeffrey Road and Roosevelt, near the I-5 freeway. Irvine police Lt. John Hare said police are investigating the death as a homicide, although they have not ruled out a self-inflicted gunshot.
Police searched well into the night for a man in his mid-20s, about 5-feet, 6-inches tall, wearing a dark, hooded sweat shirt spotted leaving the scene of the shooting on foot.
Police have called off their large-scale search of the area, which brought in helicopters, bloodhounds and officers to scour the neighborhoods surrounding the shopping center, Hare said. Officers are still on the lookout for the man, Hare said. No weapon has been found.
Police have not released the name of the victim, saying they are still in the process of notifying his family. Hare said the victim may have worked in a nearby restaurant, although he would not specify which one.
The shooting comes as a shock in a community that for the past four years has been labeled the safest large city in the country, a designation based on annual FBI crime statistics.
Irvine police recently indicated that they are on track to become the safest city for a fifth year, with preliminary data showing a 17 percent drop in violent crime during the first half of 2008. Those drops mean the city's per capita crime rate last year is on track to be the lowest in its history.
There have been two high-profile incidents in the past six months, however.
In early September, a man was shot and killed after pointing a military assault weapon at SWAT officers following a police standoff at his Irvine apartment.
Later the same month, a former Los Angeles sheriff's deputy was charged with torturing and sexually assaulting his wife and another man during what authorities say was a nine-hour attack at an Irvine apartment complex. Robert McClain in early December pleaded not guilty to the charges, and is expected back in court in late March.

Just as a side question, what was the military assult weapon? 99.99999% of the time the douchebags don't even know the difference between a rifle, pistol, carbine or slingshot. OH well...
