Last night, Mr. SoCal was driving home on the freeway in Irvine. There was a bunch of smoke coming from around Culver. Some of you may have seen it. It turns out that was his coworker's house on fire. They lost everything.  :( I want to do something for them but I don't know what...

Yikes! The moment you put a face/name/relation to a tragedy, it affects more, doesn't it?
When my uncle's house was burned down, the first thing they needed was clothes. Then came groceries and everyday supplies. May be send them some clothes, or a gift card to Target?

(I am in a giving mood.. suggestions that is)

My deepest sympathy to your friend's losing everything. The real tragedy is the HOA will make them rebuild a house just like the one burned down.
